Downtown Toronto gets lit up by passing storm

Posted by Derek Flack / May 30, 2011

Toronto Lightning StormSo that was quite the light show last night. Despite the fact that the worst of the storm passed to the south of the city, the CN Tower still got bombed pretty good. It's funny — you'd think it'd be easy to put together a photo gallery like this every time we get a significant thunderstorm, but it's actually quite rare that more than one or two photographers in the blogTO Flickr pool upload such dramatic photos of lightning hitting Toronto. So while we've already devoted our photo of the day to the subject, it only made sense to put a fully fledged gallery together. Check 'em out. Lead photo by reemond.

One of the reasons it's relatively rare to get these pictures is that the clouds are often lower than the top of the CN Tower. We used to have a clear view of the Tower from our apartment, and it was rare that a thunderstorm would look like this!

Great storm last night. Wish I'd had my camera on me.

Creepy. Maybe it's the Mothman lurking in the clouds.

You do realise that lightning goes from ground to sky, not
the reverse ?

You know what, you are right! I was taking sequential shots of the lightning storm and after I've put them one after another in the slideshow I almost thought I did it backwards by a misstake. This is evident here: http://bit.ly/jHtasC -if you press the right arrow, you will see the progression of the bolt going from ground up to the sky.

Wat is de natuur toch mooi.
Maar tegelijkertijd ook beangstigend, wat een kracht die veel kan vernietigen.
Jammer dat deze stroom niet kan worden opgevangen. Het zou kerncentrale's overbodig maken
