Rob Ford gets the stencil treatment

Posted by Derek Flack / January 20, 2011

Rob Ford Graffiti TorontoLest we be accused of Rob Ford bashing by drawing attention to this stencil near Dovercourt and Dundas, I'd like to pause for a moment to consider what's actually going on here. My reason? Like the last bit of snoetry we wrote about, this once again strikes me as an apt metaphor for just how divisive a figure our mayor has become (or always has been).

The original message Gregory Alan Elliott carved out in the snow, one will recall, was mostly positive (or at the very least neutral). It read "Rob Ford is not my enemy," but was subsequently altered to the following: "Rob Ford is not my enemy." And it looks like something similar is going on here.

I seriously doubt that the sloppily handwritten "Nope" is the work of the same artist who did the original stencil (see below), which, while somewhat reminiscent of Shepard Fairey's now famous Obama poster (and the perhaps the Joker?), appears to mark Rob Ford's ubiquitous presence in and around Toronto more than offer commentary on his politics or effectiveness as a mayor. I don't remember David Miller getting this treatment (though it's possible that I just never saw it).

Who knows how many of these there are around town? Maybe it's the only one, but if nothing else, this is just more proof that Rob Ford has firmly captured Toronto's attention -- for better or worse. Check out the full image below. And thanks to Eric Parker who both took the photograph and brought it to our attention.

Derek is the most consistently poor poster on this blog.

I wonder how much paper is getting wasted due to the width of Rob's face going on to these stencils?

You can tell us, do you have a secret crush on him :p :p

Alas no, my crush was on xonan, but after a tumultuous affair, we had a falling out. Now he won't return my calls and doesn't like my posts. Such a shame.

Was the stencil ever present without the "NOPE" ? I feel like the two must be from the same artist. Regardless, I don't really think this is a sign of how "divisive" Ford is. That is, whether it be the work of one artist or an artist and someone who scrawled "NOPE," I'm pretty sure none of the people involved in creating this were Ford supporters.

The accusations are entirely justified. Not only that, but if you were brought to trial, you'd be found guilty on all counts. Brianne and her remarks on his weight, for a glaring example. I am NO fan of Rob Ford, but it's ridiculous. As they say, "Those who claim to be the most tolerant, are often the least."

You're in your own, little world here and have no idea how you come across.

Oh no! Derek doesn't like the mayor! Let's all lynch him because his opinions don't match our opinions! It's not like anyone ever comments on politicians or anything.

Anyway, "nope" pretty succinctly describes my feelings towards the man, too, and if that's not subtle enough to satisfy his defenders howls for tolerance, then to hell with them.

I appreciate the support, but I'd also be happy to hold up my track record against accusations of "hating" or "bashing" the mayor. I'm quite confident that I've always given our mayor fair shake -- which isn't something that's being done a whole lot around here it would seem.

I thought the NOPE is in response to the tag above the stencil, which I can only surmise to mean "Not MY Mayor."

In somewhat related news (as reported in the National Post), actor Owen Wilson just <a href="http://news.nationalpost.com/2011/01/20/owen-wilson-names-son-rob-ford/"; target="_blank">named his son Rob Ford</a>.

It isn't at Dovercourt and Dundas, it's at Dovercourt and Queen behind the Starbucks.

Well, we're not exactly arguing, but I would like to point out that I specifically used the word "comments". I'd hardly call your posts "bashing", but some of your more hyperbolic readers seem pretty keen to do so.

Your general tone suggests that you don't like the guy, sure, but the point is that you're "commenting", and I'm arguing that commentary is a very, very important part of political discourse.

Get a grip! While you are all cowering from the winter using these comment threads as a cheap excuse for human interaction, some guy goes out and stencils a really good image of Toronto's Mayor Rob Ford... elected by over half of the voters... anyway... and then some other Winter-loving Canadian comes along and makes a quick addition to the image that shows that he or she did not vote for Mayor Ford AND that he or she is aware of American election poster design (the HOPE poster is now a second runner up to the good ol' UNCLE SAM I WANT YOU poster)... so, the point I am really trying to make is that you all should show some respect (or some kind of positive response) for those creative types who are freezing their asses off DOING SOMETHING - especially since it gives you DO NOTHINGS something upon which you may comment while you sit on your asses in Starbucks... or your Mom's basements. A picture is worth a thousand...

P.S. Hating Ford or Harper or any other elected official is NOT a healthy way to live. If you don't like them, get off your asses and get involved in politics... or street art... or just sit on your asses and argue amongst each other.

Love, Greg.
