Rocco Rossi releases wise guy-inspired ad campaign

Posted by Robyn Urback / September 20, 2010

Rocco Rossi AdHave you been looking for something fresh to deck out your bedroom walls? Is that Joe Pesci poster a little worn out? The perfect solution? Your very own "Rocco Rossi: Wiseguy" poster. Tough as it may be to believe, Rossi's ads position him as the quintessential gangster: part family man and part urban badass.

Not into it? How about "Rocco Rossi: Goodfella"? Or "Rocco Rossi: Bocce Balls"? Lucky for you, you can have all three. The Toronto mayoral candidate has updated his website with high res posters available for download.

Also for your enjoyment are radio ads narrated by a Godfather-sounding Rocco-enthusiast jarringly interrupted by a voice telling you to vote for the atypical candidate. You can also downtown the Rocco Rossi ringtone (which, admittedly, is quite catchy) or check out YouTube videos of the young candidate with hair and coke bottle glasses.

Clearly, Rossi's multimedia attempts slaughter those of his competitors. But is the effort enough to win votes? And does the humour work?

Check out a few of the YouTub clips below:

That's nothing! Rob Ford has a "Dimitri The Lover"-inspired campaign ad in the works titled "The Douche That Hoses City Hall", http://torontoist.com/2010/09/dimitri_the_lover_endorses_rob_ford.php

The average mobster is usually able to find funding for what they want.

How the hell does Rossi think he'll find the funding to build that idiotic expressway?

Dear Mayoral candidates: STOP BEING STUPID. The field is so weak all one of you have to do is display a triple digit IQ for even a fleeting moment and you'll be a front-runner.

What's next, Pantalone's going to head over to the New Era store and snap a few photos in some 59Fiftys?

oh yeah, smart move, rossi, paint yourself as a 'goodfella' italian. what toronto really needs is some gangsters in charge. not.

The moment he announced the spadina tunnel he should have stepped out of the race. He has no hope in hell of winning and with each new move he seems to be further trying to cement that. All this is really achieving is splintering the votes that would be needed to beat Ford.

This'll be the nail in the Rossi campaign grave. Expect him to drop out by October 6

Hmm... a big issue in the mayoral race is corruption and trustworthiness.

Yup, nothing says "trustworthy" and "anti-corruption" like a mafia-themed campaign!

This guy should just crawl into a tunnel.

Yeah, but then he'll just bill us a billion dollars for that tunnel. And then Smitherman will want another billion for his consultants.

The campaign makes sense. He was party of the liberal party and they are bigger crooks than the mob

This guy is a friggin' joke. Just draws attention to his shakedown abilities. What a total douche. Fire your advisors. You are now officially done, Rocco Soprano.

It's a complete disaster, but someone has to save this poster in an archive somewhere - it's an incredible artifact from a municipal election campaign that, for the first time in years, is very much less than dull or predictable.

A lot of people at my work have been talking about the mayor campaign today and some of them saw these ads and were talking about them. Rossi's definitely getting extra attention, and isn't that the point of advertising? I'm just sayin.

A few weeks back, Rob Ford was being interviewed on live tv. As it concluded, rocco attacks Rob from behind with verbal insults, like a school girl at recess. The cameras were still on and it was obvious it was a set up rather a by chance bumping into Rob Ford. That made me decide not to vote for rocco...

Wow, what hateful comments on this thread. I'm not a Liberal or an Italian, but I do admire moat Italians that I know.and don't hate liberals either. I'm a life-long Torontonian, who will not vote for Rossi this time, because he's too far behind. Nor will I vote for Rob Ford.
I don't like his spiteful attitude; he has no idea how to work well with others and that's his fatal flaw.
NO ONE is in favour of waste, including me; but we need a lot more than a speeded-up motor-mouth, who taps into the anger(fomented by Ford and followers in the media)and repeats ad nauseum, the same old, same-old. Now he's bragging about how he's going to cut in half the number of councillors, so he'll have less opposition----doesn't matter that WE will have even less representation. And he's GUARANTEEING that all our councillors will personally return phone calls within 48 hours! He'll crack the whip on those good-for-nothing idiots whom we also elect, by the way. He must think he's God, but his arrogance and nasty side, both privately (wife assault charge) and publicly, show he's nothing but an opportunistic, out-of-control, control freak, riding a one-trick pony. The next mayor needs to do a lot more For Toronto than cut waste.

Ford never guaranteed councillors would have to return phone calls. Unless you have a source?

Less councillors would lead to less votes for and against him. You mentioned yourself, you the people will elect councillors. That's not less opposition.
Look up the meaning of "bragging" too.

You won't vote Rossi because he's behind, I would imagine then you'd like to solidify support for 2nd place then to oust Ford as frontrunner?
That means Smitherman. One million wasted e-Health Smitherman. Great choice.

You talk about hateful comments in your opening sentence, but go on to do the same in the body of your comment. Really goes to show the thought you put into this.

I hope your attitude on spiteful attitudes leads you urge your councillor to vote as the people want, and not just against Ford because you despise him.

You got me wrong on the 'despise', Mike. I don't hate Ford, but I do dislike his explosive anger, his character and arrogance. On CP24 today, he did guarantee 48 hour phone call returns from council. Watch it.

True, he might have fewer pro councillors with 22 vs 44, but it's still easier to manage or influence the lesser number, and does little to help the treasury.
One other relevant fact here: Only the province can cut council numbers, and that's not likely to happen. So why is he so sure???

You don't like the word 'bragging'? Well, then, I'll try 'boasting'. Just watch today's CP24 clip with Steven LeDrew.

Maybe yes, maybe no, regarding Smitherman. And thanks for not using the pejorative Slitherman. He doesn't inspire me, but he may be a better choice than the others. No matter who we vote for, we have to take a leap of faith. And with George, he says he's learned from the billion dollar blowout, that he's accountable. So far, I haven't heard Ford say he needs to improve his social skills,(ACC hockey game?) or that he has learned to achieve consensus.

Pantalone and Thompson seem to have the most integrity of the group, aside from Rossi. But again, their chances look slim at this point in time.

So it's really a risk, no matter who gets in, right? Question is, who is the least risky of all?

I've followed this election very closely and although I normally take pride in being able to look at the situation from all angles, I just can't here. In my mind, Rocco is the only one with the brains, the stamina and the heart to turn Toronto around. Time for 'real change' people!

Feel free to make spoofs of the Rossi campaign poster. I've edited the picture a bit to make a template for you to use!

Whoever did these ads should be fired. Not because of the concept, but because they put Rossi in them. Remember The Sopranos? Well he is BIG PUSSY. These ads are an insult to all Sopranos fans everywhere.

I'm voting for Ford just to get back at Rossi for this.

I can not in good faith vote for Smitherman after what he did to us on eHealth. Rob Ford is just not an option because he'll save us a few bucks but won't take the city anywhere in the next 4 years. That leaves Pantalone which I'm hesitant about because City Hall is broken and they don't get it anymore.

So all in all, I'll take this goodfella, wiseguy Rossi. The man is the most educated of the bunch, and he's actually help top executive jobs. Let's see what can happen for Toronto when a seasoned exec takes over.
