Extensive Tornado Damage in Vaughan

Posted by Jerrold Litwinenko / August 21, 2009

vaughan tornado photos damageThe damage from the tornado that struck in Vaughan (just north of Toronto) is still being assessed.

Some incredible aerial shots by photographer Tom Podolec on Flickr show the extent to which the tornado damaged a number of homes.

Injury reports so far are surprisingly few (one man suffered from a heart attack this morning, and an 11-year old boy was killed in the Town of Durham yesterday).

Given the severity of the damage (some 200 homes may need to be demolished, and an additional 600 were damaged), it's amazing and quite relieving that more people weren't serious hurt or killed. A state of emergency was declared, and Mayor David Miller has pledged to provide any and all aid the City of Toronto can.

All photos above by Tom Podolec. See also in fullscreen on Flickr.

More photos, showing damage in Woodbridge, are also on Flickr.

The storm was unbelievable, and one of the worst that I have seen since'69. It was a scary sight even up here in Etobicoke. I thought our large Maple and the other trees surrounding my house were going to be uprooted, the way they were swaying violently.

My heart goes out to the family of that ll yr. boy who was killed. Also to the family of the heart attack victim. Bless them.

A lot or damage to many residences, but thank God there were no more fatalities.

The McMansions! The banal McMansions!

Who will save the McMansions?

We are fortunate that there were few injuries. One of my concerns during the storm was flying debris colliding into buildings and cars, especially regarding the tornado that touched down in Vaughan Mills. Rutherford Road is extremely busy in that area, especially during rush hour (after the Go Train station parking lot has just emptied).

Comment (if indeed that is your real name),

That was my first thought too. Then I remembered: downtown living is the new banal.

Sympathies to the family of that boy that was killed.

why couldn't the tornado have destroyed Queen West and Kensington Market... get rid of the freaks. then the insurance companies could come in and rebuild it and normal people could move in.

Hey rocker and 'comment' aka anonymous - shut up.

If you have nothing positive or intelligent to add then rather stay out of the conversation. Peoples lives have been irreparably changed - have some consideration!

I wonder why people read a diversity-promoting BlogTO when they are so narrow-minded themselves? 'Freaks'? Really?

To Nick. I found your comment very rude and uncalled for. I do know what it is like because my home, and children and job, have been destroyed by 2 house fires, through no fault of our own. We had to rebuild and start from scratch also. We got a bit of help, but mainly picked ourselves up and started anew. We were thankful that we all got out safely.

I do understand your loss, because I have experienced it, but when you get down to it, that can be rebuilt, but the loss of loved ones can never be replaced.

My heart and sympathy go out to those families who lost their loved one. A feel for the ones that lost their homes and possessions, but they can be replaced. I counted my blessings even after our two tragedies.

I'm not sure how I avoided hearing about this until now. I've had my own brush with a tornado before, as I live only a short distance from where that tornado touched down in Hamilton a few years back. Two of my brothers were students at the school that got destroyed, actually, and I was less than a year out of it. It's pretty incredible what nature can do when it's angry, isn't it? In any case, hopefully as much as possible turns out okay in the end.

Gloria. You are correct. I made a mistake thinking that Nick was referring that statement to me. My mistake, and apologies.

Nick. I wrote you another comment below. I thought you were writing to me, so I responded. My apologies for that mistake.

comments remark is just so banal man, and yet he/she thinks they are in no way being hypocritical just by making such a statement.

Blessings go out to all the victims.

STOP...the bashing. What does this have to do with the tornado? This is no place to vent. Please stop.

It was a horrible storm and judging by the photos above it's simply amazing no one got hurt.

to elicha.....you obviously don't know the area. These are not million dollar homes or mansions. It is a suburban neighbourhood - grandparents, children, families....hard working individuals who have built homes & a community that they care for. None of them deserving of the comments that you and others have made.

Read some of the comments above to understand why toronto sucks. I cant wait to move to a city where people actually give a damn about more than themselves and their drama
