Caribana Parade 2009 in Photos

Posted by Guest Contributor / August 2, 2009

Caribana ParadeCaribana 2009 kicked into high gear Saturday morning with music, floats and the annual parade that piled tens of hundreds of observers along the Lakeshore. The weather cooperated this year and provided the requisite tropical heat to go along with the saucy dancing and the spicy food. All in all it was a great celebration.

Caribana ParadeDespite worries that high fences would dampen the spirits of both the crowd and the performers, the best was made of a less than ideal situation. And in some places, the fences were an appropriate height for spectating.Caribana 2009The crowd along Lakeshore Rd. was pretty amazing.20090802-Caribana-Lakeshore.jpgCaribana 2009 offered an interesting cross section of world cultures coming together in the spirit of merrymaking and fun.Caribana PeopleCostumed performers of all ages were in full regalia and proudly representing their culture.20090802-Caribana2rbm3.jpgA common sight during Caribana were enormous outfits that had to be carted around on wheels.20090802-Caribana-rb3m.jpg

Participants proudly wore their vibrant colours.20090802-caribana-feathers.jpgAll in all, it was a day of smiles and good vibes at Caribana 2009.

Somebody from Caribana stole my super nice bike. Just cut my locker and ran away. Police can't help me. I hate Caribana!

This is the most half assed journalism I have ever read. It's written by someone who feels obliged to report on it rather than actually cares about it. For a blog about all things Torontoian, you would think coverage on the 1 annual event to pull more foreigners to our city than any other, ought to deserve something a little more in depth, no? It reads like a primer for rural white Canada on "Multiculturalism and You".

Fail.

Hi CJ. I'm sorry to hear that you're disappointed with this post. But, as is the standard with our "In Photos" series, this is primarily a visual offering. The intention with this particular submission was not to provide in depth coverage, but rather a sort of snapshot of what it all looked like. We'll take your input under advisement, and thanks for reading.

Yeah, this is really lame, dry, shitty reporting.

"interesting cross section of world cultures" to caption a photo of, gasp! Asians!
Actually, there are lots of people of Asian descent in the Caribbean. People whose families have been born and raised for several generations in the Caribbean- so those people actually have Caribbean culture-- as evidenced by the fact that they're playing mas in Caribana-- not a "cross section of world culture".

"A common sight during Caribana were enormous outfits that had to be carted around on wheels"...? Really? This sounds like it was written by a Martian.

As the commenter above notes, this whole post reads like it was written by someone who has no interest at all in Caribana, other than to blandly remark at how "vibrant" it is. Isn't there anyone on BlogTO's staff who might bother to research Caribana or Carnival, or talk to any actual West Indians to learn anything beyond this superficial "Dick and Jane wore red" reporting? A wordless photoessay would actually have been better. This is super-lame.

What's with the high detention fences? Looks like Big Brother is controlling the fun.

Bet the mayor will call it a success and therefore all future parades will have the stupid detention fences everywhere.

@cj & rm: Sure, the captions could have been written by a fourth-grader, but if you've got such a problem with it then write your own article.

Well, the captions aren't inaccurate, they are befitting of the images. This is a photo essay after all and one apparently patched together from different sources. Some people just like trolling websites and miss the point entirely. And rm, you totally misread the caption, it wasn't pertaining to your "Asians" but to the photo above featuring crowd in general. You clearly have issues.

I was at Caribana this year and it was an awesome sensory experience. The photos capture the energy and personality as well as how big this event is. More people should experience it firsthand.

I think the interests of the readers would have been better served by simply posting a link to the Caribana images posted in the blogTO flickr pool:

"The crowd along Lakeshore Rd. was pretty amazing" -the only amazing thing about this shot is how thin the crowd is and the caption about costumes being carted on wheels really does sound like an excerpt from "Dick & Jane Go To Caribana".

Actually, a correct to a commenter above...

The caption of "interesting cross section of world cultures" does not relate to the photo of the older couple below. The caption for that picture is BELOW the picture not above it.

Again, I think the comments should be about the photos as this is a photo report not an in depth report. I enjoyed the photos personally

Nice! How'd you manage to get by the fences? We couldn't even get close enough to take pictures as it was crazy packed and the fences were in the way,

I participated this year in caribana... i was with carnival nations who wwon band of the year....the 'detention" fences are a good thing for me although they did not work. but i spent alot of money on my costume and to have outsiders that did not pay to be on the road and ruin my costume is not fun...i hope they keepp thee fences and try to inforce keeping people on the other sidee better.

I can't wait for Caribana Parade each year - it's such a wonderful time, the people, music, food/drinks, the beautiful costumes and of course the vibe.

Crystal.. I agree with you about the fences, it didn't work and really slow down the entire parade, there are those people who just don't care if they spoiled the celebration, etc. I think they need to do a better job and deal with this big issue -- hire more security, etc

FYI - I came a website that have some very good and interesting photos of the parade http://www.caribanafever.com

Besides, Caribana being a dumb fenced off Ontario attempt at pretending to care about ethnicity in Toronto, this is a funny ass thread. If I was still into "jumping up" I'd go to Montreal where they have a real celebration of "Afro Canadian" culture after the parade is over. What the hell is there to celebrate in Toronto, besides a fenced off Carribean parade, a bunch of clubs that are promoting overpriced parties that end at 2AM, horrible food & service, price gouging and a night walking up and down Yonge street with nothing to do?
