Toronto Sun Outs Two-Faced Councillor

Posted by Jerrold Litwinenko / May 5, 2009

joe pantalone two facesDoing my daily news roundup this morning, I was practicing my due diligence by checking out what the Toronto Sun had to say about the happenings in Toronto (I'm generally not a reader, but I like to present a diverse selection in the Morning Brew).

That's when I stumbled upon this very odd "photo" of city councillor Joe Pantalone. OMG. He's a mutant with TWO FACES!

Clicking on the story reveals the truth: he has not actually spawned a second face. The photo used by the Sun in this case is byline tagged as a "Sun Media Illustration" by Tim Peckham). I feel ripped off. Here I was thinking that Pantalone was a freak of nature who'd somehow managed to hide his second face all along.

In the world of changing media landscape and the ongoing fight for audiences online, I guess it's now fair game to lure readers into content by putting Frankensteinesque Photochop jobs of local politicians on the front page of news web sites? I'm not so sure about this; I want my news in more raw, less manipulated form.

Well, Mercer's been doing that on a federal basis for a while now...

Don't all politicians have two faces?

I think this is a natural evolutionary phase for the Sun as it becomes The Toronto Weekly World Enquirer. Next up? The Mayor revealed as Batboy?

Mercer is entertainment. Isn't the Sun supposed to be news?

Also, according to the Sun apparently there are 9 Trillion Germans living in the GTA. I heard it somewhere, so it has to be true.

@Jerrold if the Sun is news I'd hate to see what they call entertainment

When I think about it, comment articles really don't belong on the front page, let alone the main headline. Comments are not news and in addition to the obvious bias, are often filled with misinformation and shouldn't be masqueraded as news.
