Snowing in the Annex in May

Posted by Lisa Pasold / May 13, 2009

Winter comes back brieflyJust when I thought it was safe to go out in my flip-flops... along comes a film shoot to mess up the corner of Bathurst & Bloor in the Annex. The piles of cotton batting snow was no problem, but the melting mess outside Honest Ed's was all too convincing for my taste. A friendly crew member says they're filming "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" and that it'll be in theaters next year.

Weird. I just picked up Scott Pilgrim to read, since I have heard good things about it. And am going to Central later tonight. Should I bring out my boots? And get ready for some spontaneous snowball fights?

Edgar Wright's directing! He's putting up photos of the shoot as it takes place around town at www.edgarwrighthere.ca. Torontonian fans are playing 'hey-I-know-where-that-is'; fans from abroad are saying things like "Wow, it must be really cold in Canada right now" or "Why do they call it 'Pizza Pizza'?" Glee.

Also, I recommend that everyone go read the books. They're great, 'n stuff.

I would so hangout in the area just to catch a glimpse of Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Looking forward to the movie too. Hopefully Simon Pegg is in there somewhere too. Maybe I'll catch a glimpse of him too!

These idiots have been leaving 'snow' all over Cabbagetown, and even down Cherry Street. Screw film crews.

Cotton batting, not batten.

"Pilgrim" followed me around yesterday...was at Wychwood Barns & they're filming in Barn 2 all through next week. no cotton batten (or batting) fortunately, but lots of disco balls.

I live at st. clair and christie and they were at hillcrest park about 2 weeks ago...the whole park was covered with "snow" and the playground swings, etc had been removed.

there also seemed to be filming at big white house on the north east corner of the park....do you think they rented that house from the owners, and put them in a hotel, or is that house a local house that's rented for such purposes?

While I appreciate the employment and cash this production brings to Toronto - this production company stinks.
They neglected to inform the merchants in the area about the filming and proceeded to block access to their establishments without a permit to do so. This costs merchants $$$ in lost revenue and they still have to pay employees to sit around and do nothing.

we got notification about the filming up here in the st. clair christie/whychwood neighbourhood....it sux if they weren't consistent in the notifications at every location.

but on the subject of lost revnue: the ttc/city of toronto streetcar construction on st. clair west has been going on for YEARS...and the local businesses are def suffering....I don't remember getting any notices about that.

Stop watching Televisions and movies.
Than you will have a right to complain.
Until than I hope idiots that are bitching about film sets will shut up.

If you follow Edgar Wright (the director of the film)'s blog you'll see there are a lot of people who are very excited about this film. In fact a friend of mine came to visit from San Francisco specifically for TCAF last week and visited a number of the film locations.

Just a thought, but this movie is likely to have a cult following and I have a feeling it will contribute something to the idea of Toronto as a destination (the city itself, not just the attractions in the city), and people will visit The Annex because they loved the movie so much and they want to visit the world that creator Bryan Lee O'Malley lived in and was inspired by.

This movie will be a good thing for the city. It stinks if there wasn't any notice, but the pylons and fake snow that were there a day before shooting started should have served as a hint and you could have called the City's Film and Television office for details.

And just a bit of bitchiness on my part: If you're going to lose your shirt over less than a day of lost business, you need a new accountant.
