The Great Sorauren Pumpkin Patch

Sorauren PumpkinsLast night I discovered where pumpkins go to retire. A gathering of hundreds of carved Halloween pumpkins lined the paths of Sorauren Park in Roncesvalles. The sheer volume and diversity or pumpkins was incredible and throngs of pedestrians slowly strolled through the glowing orange spheres.

Today, almost all of the pumpkins remain - which is amazing, because with them all lined-up like that, it's a smashing-pumpkins fan's dream. I can't tell if they will all be lit up again tonight, but I think I'll return to the park with a few tea lights to revive a few.

Sorauren PumpkinsWithout my tripod, my photos really don't do the experience justice. I recommend Big Daddy Hame's flickr page for the best photos of the event.

Sorauren PumpkinsMost people in the city don't have a vote in the American election, but it seemed to inspire some carvers nonetheless.

Turn out this year was amazing, probably double the number of pumpkins and triple the people. My favourite was the haunted house that looked like it was on fire (fourth photo from the top). Another crowd pleaser was one of Stephen Harper with devil horns.

Wow! That's so cool! I didn't know they did that.

What a wonderful annual tradition! Every neighbourhood should do this :)

Totally awesome! This is definitely something I'll have to check out next year. What a great idea and great way to bring the community together. That's what I love about TO!

It's a " GROVE OF ENCHANTED PUMPKINS. " I hope this spreads all over the city and everywhere Halloween is celebrated. Next year this time, hopefully we'll be seeing pix and reports from around the globe.

This was such an amazing show on Saturday night! I went back to see it last night and my pumpkin had had its head kicked in. :)

My wife and I were sooo glad our neighbour told us about this so we could bring our Barack O'Lantern over. Ours is the right-most Obama in the pic with several Obamas and a Palin. On it's own, it looked quite good, but doesn't compare with the carving skills of some others!!

What an amazing event. Apparently it started about 5 years ago when a mom just started calling some other moms... I couldn't believe how the number of pumpkins kept growing as the night went on!

So awesome, I wish I had known to bring my pumpkin over... every park in Toronto should do this!!

Amazing! I'm definitely there next year.

Please, we have enough corporate sponsorship in this city. Let's leave Bay Street out of this.

Fantastic, I wish we had a jack-o-lantern retirement service like this in town! We're planning on composting our retired pumpkins here at the Maple Baby blog, but perhaps we'll organize a second showing like this next year.

Great post Joseph!
