MyCityToronto a Joke?

Posted by Tim / September 17, 2008

My City TorontoIs it April Fool's Day? If not, how else to explain what I just clicked over to at MyCityToronto.com? Either these people know something about web site design that the rest of the world doesn't or....

To be honest, I'm not sure where to begin with this. Whoever is behind it they definitely have some money to play with as I recently noticed a billboard ad next to the Gardiner and Jerrold mentioned he thought he heard some advertising on 680 News.

I could probably write a screenplay on the creation of this thing, but for now I'll just highlight some of the more interesting aspects.

1. Gotta love the slogan - Toronto's Favourite Default Home Page. That has a Webby Award for copywriting (if there was one) written all over it.

2. The logo - What did they do? Hire the team behind Toronto Unlimited?

3. The advertising claims - They claim 1 million visitors per month. Well, that's a really nice, convenient round number. Too bad Alexa tells a different story.

4. Video slide show - Do I even need to write anything about this?

Oh. I could go on....The icons, the totally useless pages, the link to CNN as a local news source....

Ads on the Gardiner, radio, and an extensive number of pages and features make it clear that it's no joke. It certainly is significant (yet very poorly executed) effort.

"Toronto's Favourite Default Home Page" is just priceless. I'll be giggling about that throughout lunchtime.

Hey, I just googled "Lively Life International Fine Food" and found your post from **last year**. You wrote "This health food store is located on the lower level of St. Lawrence Market. More details coming soon." Soon, eh?

:(

I LOVE THIS SITE!!! I love the footer, I love how the cities are interchangeable, that Vaughan and Toronto are on equal footing. I love the little people walking in front of the massive screens and the foreshortened perspective. I love the colours and the call to action for the Video Contest, I love the audacity, the cool retro design, the fact that they think a traffic rank of 927,000 on Alexa means they have that many visitors, I love that people spent money on this, I love its very depressing, suffocating and unrepresentational existence. Thanks Tim!!! Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a fast moving vehicle to step in front of.

Sorry this doesn't have anything to do with blogTO, but I read from the Beyond Robson sight that Time Shore is the editor. I just want to bring to his attention the quite racist post one of his bloggers, Sean Orr, posted this morning.

It's derogatory, offensive, and if published in any other medium would have been censored. I hope Beyond Robson doesn't support these types of racist stances.

@QT - Thanks for the feedback. I'm following the discussion on Sean's post on BR. Just so you know we don't tolerate any racist remarks or stereotypes.

@Kelly - you're right. That needs to be updated! Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

To me, you are being too critical and that there was a significant level of investment but at least they are trying to be creative and unique. I suppose you are jealous!??! I find the information informative and well organized - I will log it in my favourites for sure.

@operation_houdini "I will log it in my favourites for sure" LOL! I guess we just found one of people behind this fiasco. Just a hint - pull your money out NOW if you invested in this nightmare.

this site is a hot steaming pile of puppy crap.

definitely a "what not to do" case study in any web design class.

hey people, stop letting your little nephew design your site!

kinda funny... If you go to "fast food" and go to the "Toronto Juice Bars and Healthy Food Choices" there's one called "Booser Juice". is that right or did they mean Booster Juice? booser juice is a good idea for a name though.

Talk about bogus! I randomly clicked through to restaurants, and then Vegetarian. First off, the text under the "slide show" pic is "Vegitarian" (yes, with an "i"). Clicking a few restos takes you through to a "coming soon" or something that looks like a business card. This hand-holding-the-business-card design was the selection for Vegetarian Haven on Baldwin, which I know has <a href="http://www.vegetarianhaven.com/";>its own site</a>. How bogus can you get?

But on the positive side, it's got this, oh I don't know, sort of retro late '90s look to it, dontcha thing?

Overuse of Flash makes me extremely unhappy. This would have ruined my day if it weren't for the fact that it's HILARIOUSLY bad.

That site hurts my User-End sensibilities, and my eyes. The sad thing is a lot of sites like this pop up and lure local businesses into paying for placement in the directory... not sure how this one works, but it smells of placement scam.

I like that the sample Big Box (aka "Large Square") banner has been squished to 299 x 197. And is a BMP. And is named "Bibgoxsample.bmp".

I think this is what the Jeopardy game board would look like if they started selling pieces of it to corporate sponsors.

I forsee these guys getting hit with a lot of angry complaints regarding their apparent "S.M.A.R.T. Touch Screen Business Directory. I mean, I tapped my screen for 20 minutes, and the only thing I got was a sore finger...

Oh, and anyone who hasn't read the "Info" page yet should do so. Apparently, the site authors decided that linking together a bunch of marketing terms in a meaningless jumble was the way to go here.

Got a major laugh at the "news release" - http://www.mycitydesigns.com/media/News.html:

"With each of the 200 MyCity sites fully populated with its limit of only 16 featured businesses in each of its 384 business categories, revenues can reach over $11,000,000.00 per City and the potential of the company bearing a value in the Billion dollar figure within the next 5 years is not an impossibility."

"With the low cost of advertising and high online traffic levels, the first City (Toronto) is expected to be sold out by the end of the year.
Businesses wishing to take advantage of advertising should consider acting quickly as placements are limited and sold on a first come first serve basis!"
Neil F. / September 17, 2008 at 04:45 pm

Oh, then there's this, from the Why MyCity? page:

"Each MyCity website employs Search Method Accelerated Response Time, also known as "S.M.A.R.T"; an interface enabling online users to navigate the MyCity website by simply pointing and clicking their mouse. There is little or no input from a keyboard required to find information on the MyCity websites."

And later in that paragraph...

"This point and click interface provides an entertaining interactive experience allowing the user to access the required information in a manner similar to playing video game."

The link you provide does not work. It leads to a

From the Site Information page:

"A spectacular technological design merged with a sophisticated logic for Category Search Engine Optimization to over 380 business categories, this allows MyCityToronto.Com to be an effective "Organic Traffic Driven" local community business directory. This new internet medium is revolutionary due to its simplicity of use and innovative design."

Just... wow.

First, the billboards:

The news release is here:
http://www.mycitydesigns.com/media/News.html
(There was a colon attached before, hence the 404)

I think this guy would have had a better ROI putting his money into the Lehmann Brothers or Merrill Lynch.

I really don't know why some ppl are complaining about it. which other website is better than this one. i think all websites are the same. I just find it easier to search for places or things on mycitytoronto website.

Information on the page has been changed since this post went up.

1) "<i>With over 1,000,000.00 <b>visitors</b> per month...<i>" has been changed to hits (which I suspect is also incorrect by a lot).

2) The "news release" has been removed.

On another note, it would be far less obvious that the recent endorsing comments above were "manufactured" if all four weren't all dropped within a few minutes of another, from common IPs. Lame!

seems like it's just another business directory / vehicle for advertisements albeit an extremely lame one.

Looks like someone was inspired by the "Million Dollar Home Page" and is trying to cash in on (mostly) small business owners lack of discretion when it comes to online advertising.

it looks to me like a half descent site, but with respect to manufacturing posts, i think they are doing it and so is blogTO. after reviewing i came to the realization, that your both direct competitors, but they got money to advertise and you don't. and i don't know that as a fact, but that's what it seems like. and if we are going to talk about ip addresses, why don't you post everybody's.
criticricket / September 19, 2008 at 12:49 am

Just for the record, If, 2 "separate" people posted to this blog from the "same computer", is that not common these days?. The manufactured IP story is lame on your part! and why even bring it up when this entire post was likely "manufactured" "here" in the first place, (thats what it seems like anyways!) CONGRATULATIONS DAVE i think your right on the money, perhaps someone "IS" scared of some competition, Both Tim and Jerrold just have a very unprofessional way of dealing with it and probably using a bunch of their online friends as an unfair defense mechanism, Instead of trying to work together with MyCity to take advantage of the massive advertising exposure which is the single most reason why businesses SHOULD advertise with MyCity, it seems they think they are better off fighting and trying to get traffic riding this blog on the search engines using MyCity's well exposed name, well good luck! the truth is that MyCity is about to release a local blog system with the involvement of some serious players and editors "HINT!!!" The difference is i dont recall MyCity ever disrespecting any of its competitors, in fact MyCity is working with all sorts of Toronto based local media in harmony to enhance the development, which tells alot of what to expect in the near future (An even better site).
*Graphics can be changed but a bad reputation cant!
Lay off! this blog is discusting and intentional!
If you really want to know its not MyCity thats proving to be the Joke! The jealousy is not necessary and becoming very very obvious!

"it looks to me like a half descent site, but with respect to manufacturing posts, i think they are doing it and so is blogTO. after reviewing i came to the realization, that your both direct competitors, but they got money to advertise and you don't. and i don't know that as a fact, but that's what it seems like. and if we are going to talk about ip addresses, why don't you post everybody's"

so I guess I'm not the only one who thinks that my city is descent. I've seen advertising of this site and also heard some ads on various toronto radio stations, I think these ppl know exactly what they are doing.

I know what's going on here. It's a conspiracy! mycity is a sister organization of freshdaily and this whole controversy is faked to generate traffic on both sites but especially on mycity where the ad revenues will be greater. The clue is the fake post that comments "*Graphics can be changed". The graphics are terrible on purpose in order to get the controversy going. Once the traffic has built up they will put the professional graphics up and we will al have been fooled. "discusting"!
Mikes / September 20, 2008 at 11:43 pm

... and also the whole internet is fake!. It isn't a bunch of tubes; it's just some old telephone equipment like your grand dad used to use to call up the neighbours at harvest time. Problem is they broke the party line thingy so they had to come up with this interweb thing. My brother in law told me all about it. He's real smart.
