What's Your Story? Emo(tional)

What's Your Story? features the different characters that roam the streets of Toronto. Every Monday and Thursday, a new person shares their story, likes and dislikes about the city, a little secret and more.

Name: Cyrus
Age: 21
What neighbourhood are you from? Scarborough
What do you 'do'? Photo lab technician and a U of T student
How long have you been in Toronto? Four and a half years
What's your story?
I came from the Philippines four and a half years ago because my parents thought that the education and career options were better here. If I stayed in the Philippines, I would basically be a nurse.
I want to be a doctor but I'm really interested in photography and film directing. If I want to be something other than a doctor, then I can. I would be a film director.
Favorite thing(s) about Toronto:
The diversity. It's the most interesting part about Toronto. I get to meet different people and get to know their culture. You can have different dishes, too. It's like going to other countries but staying in Toronto.
Least favorite thing(s) about Toronto:
I would say the homeless people. When I first came here, I never thought Toronto would have homeless people.
You have 24 hours to spend with someone who's never been to Toronto before - what do you do?
Start at home or a hotel (if they're a special person) then go to the CN Tower because it's iconic to Toronto, try eating at different places and maybe go to Wonderland because it's summer. For nightlife, maybe go to Embassy bar. I've never been there but it might be interesting.
One thing that your friends/family don't know about you:
Although I look happy, I'm an emo. I'm really emotional sometimes.

Hey, keep these stories coming. The diversity between the stories is a good reflection of Toronto. I think this one was great. Not to sound patronizing but I think he sounds adorable!
I love how that just became a classified for Cyrus. (see above) Too cute.
I like these little features, too! Thanks for the Twitter notification.
yeah I think it's cool that you're not sticking to cliche hipster douche bags. I like this guy and the biker.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that there is no dark Emo in this dude. I was expecting some dark look with fag makeup, but no this guy definitely seems sane.
@Elle Driver, @lachlan - +1
" I was expecting some dark look with fag makeup"... you mean what Brat Pitt or Beckham put on his face?
Great profile, terrible response..............The word 'fag' used to demean people is disgusting. When will we not sit back and take it anymore? DISGUSTING.... HEGEMONIC MASCULINITY AT IT'S WORSE...... I hate men like you, the ones' who demean anyone who doesn't live up to your masculine standards.
Let's not shift the focus onto the comments. The focus is, and always should be on the post. Great profile, great work.
@jack - When I said dark look, fag makeup, I meant emo makeup. The black eyeliner, black nail polish the goth emo stereotype.
FYI Brad Pitt & David Beckham = not fags.
@Jesus - Jesus, it's not right to hate anyone you should know that. Even I don't "hate" hate. When I say fag, I mean gay. I feel that men shouldn't wear strong make up, like the emos do.
I just wanted to say I appreciate an emotional person, who doesn't need to go emo goth all day every day.
Keep up with the interesting profiles BlogTO.
LOL @ FYI Brad Pitt & David Beckham = not fags...
sure..they just have a big closet
I am sure Ricky Martin and Tom Cruise are straight
Cyrus, if you want to make movies one day start by writing your scripts now... Also use a film camera with a 50mm lens and photograph with it for at least a year - at the same time develop your film for free where you work. :)
Good luck,
Coloured contacts? WHY!?!?
Yes, thanks for a refreshing change from the "trendy," multi-tattooed, mangiacake, hipster douches. I'm cool with normal mangiacakes, just not the mangiacake equivalent of ginos/ginas.
It makes me sad to hear an interesting person summarize themselves as 'emo'... particularly because they're emotional. Not really what emo conjures up... as if everyone who isn't happy all the time falls into the emotional lament of the emo label.
Please, avoid such trite personal classifications. It's clear from this interview that you are more than some emo... at 21 I'd avoid those kind of shortfall self-descriptions!
