Have you ever wanted to approach someone because their face or style has left you wondering what they were all about but you were too afraid to ask?

What's Your Story? features the different characters that roam the streets of Toronto. Every Monday and Thursday, a new person shares their story, likes and dislikes about the city, a little secret and more.

Name: Kenya Black Duprey

Age: 31

What neighbourhood are you from? Atlanta, Georgia

What do you 'do'? Model/female entertainer/makeup artist. Stunning beauty - that's a full time job!

How long have you been in Toronto? 1 week

What's your story?

I work at a show club in Atlanta and a girl that works there told me there was a pageant in Toronto so I came down. I entered and won Miss Canada World, part of Drag Ball Toronto (the other contestant dropped out). Some of the different categories we were tested on were swimwear, evening gown and an interview. I travel all over the world entertaining and I also dance at a topless club.

Favorite thing(s) about Toronto:

I have this thing about interracial dating - I don't approve of it back home - but here, I can appreciate it. I love everything about Toronto. I love the clothes here because I know no one else in Atlanta will have anything I have.

Least favorite thing(s) about Toronto:

The prices of cigarettes. Everything is so expensive and people don't tip at the shows.

You have 24 hours to spend with someone who's never been to Toronto before - what do you do?

Shopping first and then, up Queen Street because there are a lot of good restaurants. We'd also go to the needle (CN Tower).

One thing that your friends/family don't know about you:

I have a lot of insecurities.

I can tell you one thing for sure:
She has a website big as Moncton airport. And there's annoying music on it and I couldn't find a way to turn it off.
So, I turned off the website.

She won a beauty contest? Isn't that precious!
She looks like a clapped-out south side tramp and those
tattoos don't do anything.

She comes from Georgia to enter a local contest?
Shouldn't there be a residency requirement somewhere?

Last time I'll ask: will special characters ever work in the comments?

Cool Interview.

Its kind of weird how someone can come from Atlanta and win a Canadian Pagent.

@Jordan - Yes! Special characters will one day work. Hopefully sooner rather than later :)

As a black woman living in Toronto, I am very weary of seeing this archetype portrayed in the media... no wonder when I walk around in Toronto, I feel that people are afraid do as much as look at me...

p.s. Is it just me or does the Toronto interracial dating scene seem to be a scarcity when it comes to seeing black women in interracial relationships? Personally I'm open to it... maybe when people see someone like me they assume I might be loud, have an attitude and enjoy being called everything you might find in an (insert chart topping rapper here) song...

...just a personal rant.

You heard it here first: interracial dating is location-dependent. By the way, there are several 'Miss Canada' pageants including Miss Canada Globe, Miss Canada International, Miss World Canada, Miss Universe Canada, and others.

Happy Canada Day, everyone!
@ David: the player is on the first page bottom left corner. Failing that, there's always the speaker volume nob, which I always keep at hand. It is a glitzy website, but what can one expect, her career is entertainment. Personally I dislike tattoos, but nice stereotyping of South side tramps.
@ Sandra: I hear you about the isolation - I just heard that from friends that were visiting from the UK. I did my best to show them the good side, but it can happen that people are aloof/afraid and take the Sun seriously. Quadruple that for young black men. My experience about the interracial dating scene is just the opposite. And in such a diverse city as this, the opportunities abound to meet people from other cultures. So get out there and party!

I find all people fascinating and I guess I have an intuitional feeling about people because I like people who I feel comfortable around and I guess I base everything on personality ... I never see a colour ... race ... religion ... age ... I just like people who are of friendly nature and the vibes are natural and fun to be around ... a smile can break many barriers

I'm not going to have to hunt around for a knob and turn down the volume because I'm already listening to my music and I don't want anyone else's particularly at a high level.
Her music was so loud I had to turn down the stereo.

Moreover she's a carpetbagger. How's that for a transplanted term? Just like she's a transplant, so too the term.

"scarcity when it comes to seeing black women in interracial relationships"
^^ ... on the contrary, I think many women don't mind, perhaps to get away from their rapper x-boyfriends. There are tons of dark beauties in TO, I have dated some, and will again in a heartbeat.

Must they have everything...I love my "rapper boyfriends" they exude a kind of sexiness respect and personality white men will never have..Besides if you can't find love in someone who looks like you ITS CALLED SELF HATE!!..personally i find all of your comments humorous...So what you don't like my tattoos..LIFE WILL GO ON!!
