See Toronto Now - Or Not

Posted by Tim / June 16, 2008

See Toronto NowI'm not sure where to begin in my critique of See Toronto Now, Toronto Tourism's latest ad campaign. So since the Globe and Mail beat us to the punch this weekend with their own write-up I thought rather than adding my two cents to this I'd simply take this moment to play with this cool video on another Canadian city's tourism web site and let others chime in with their thoughts.

Keep reading to take our poll.

I love that the URL for the above promotion is NYC2008.

That is a seriously impressive video. Wow. That's what you do in order to sex the place up and get Americans to visit.

Yeah -- I've been to Montreal already and after seeing the video I totally want to go back for a visit. That's a campaign that really gets how to make the best use of multimedia.

yes, montreal is better than toronto in many regards. like having enough amenities and public places to fill two minutes of video.

that montreal video misses a lot. but i suppose a tourism video can only capture so much./ as evidenced by the toronto ads above, which bypass a hella lot.

I got a "No flash for you!" error. No, really.

I guess when you need tourist dollars, you have to appeal to the people most likely to give them. And then perhaps this new campaign works. Personally, it doesn't appeal to me as a Torontonian, but that's not the point is it?

Frankly, the Montreal flash video works so well because you hardly have to try to sell Montreal..the city does all the work for you, so they can simply show images of La Belle Ville.

However, Toronto is not a belle, and is frankly not glamerous. If glamour is the only way to draw tourists, then I can understand why Toronto is trying so hard to dress itself up.

To me, Toronto is a place where one can be themself, chill out and have a good time without much hassle: it just takes a little more effort and knowing what you want.

Oh dear, looks like Rufus Wainwright was correct, after all. Come on, everyone... let's all move to Montreal.

I wonder why Niagara Falls is included on the site and Kensington Market isn't.

That's an awesome video of Montreal! Why can't Toronto do something just as cool? Toronto just sucks at marketing.

Why Does City Hall keep hiring overpriced sleazy AD agencies to do tourism campaigns!? this is another reason why toronto gov't needs to be reformed. I wonder how these people graduated Uni and got real-world jobs. I guess it pays to be a greasy haired ad exec nowdays. You don't even need a brain. How is this supposed to appeal to the GLBT community? Because all we care about is sex and pride parties right!? lol.

It's an improvement at least, although holy sh!t, way to go Montreal.

Toronto is definitely harder to package... it's like those people who, when asked what music they like, they can only say "everything". Toronto has everything, but it's really difficult to capture that and present it rather than just leaving it up to the imagination... and imaginations don't book travel plans.

While the Montreal video was technically impressive, and looked/sounded great, what did it have in it that made Montreal look any different/better than any other mid-sized city in the entire world? Personally, I love Montreal, but if I'd never been, that video would have done nothing to convince me to go. And in comparison to Toronto, Montreal doesn't have nearly as much to do, see, or go to.
