Your Toronto morning news roundup for Wednesday June 25th, 2008:

Dead raccoons and squirrels (some oddly and intentionally posed with flowers), along with poisoned bread, have been found in High Park. These discoveries come after a number of dogs fell ill and died and police traced the source back to intentional poisoning of water fountains for dogs. What could possess someone to do all of this remains a mystery.

Residents of south Etobicoke want two swingers clubs shut down in the Lakeshore & Kipling area. Their locations on a main street, where kids pass to and from school and daycare, is problematic for residents (who also live on main streets and get freaky kinky in their homes at night without posing a problem for passing kids).

Taxi fares are going up in just a few weeks. Come mid-July, the starting fare will be $4 (up from $3) and travel cost will jump to $0.25 per 155m (up from $0.25 per 170m). In related news, bananas will soon cost $4 each (up from $0.25) after environmental, fuel, and social injustice costs are figured in.

The province is giving Toronto a $5-million injection to help fight gun and gang-related crime in troubled neighbourhoods. 26 new officers will join the beat, and they won't be wasting time harassing gun club enthusiasts.

Jays fans had reason to smile last night. Cito was welcomed home by the enthusiastic crowd, in what was his first game as coach back at SkyDome in over a decade. And the team came out and ripped the Cardinal's tail feathers Reds' stockings off in a 14-1 romp.

The city will be studying the wind near the Scarborough Bluffs, now that a moratorium on offshore wind farms has been lifted. Researchers will install an anemometer on the lake, which will assess the wind patterns and eventually the feasibility of introducing energy-generating wind turbines in the area.

Raccoons posed with flowers in their paws? Let's hope those shots don't turn up in the Flickr pool.

Thanks for not saying Rogers Centre

Denise on June 25, 2008 8:42 AM

Closing swingers clubs is ridiculous. It's not like kids have any idea what happens there, and it's not like they are having sex on the front lawn.

Seriously, what happens between consenting adults in none of our business. Leave them alone!

Chris Clarke on June 25, 2008 9:08 AM

The Jays beat the Reds last night, not the Cardinals.

I live in the area and there seems to be a slight increase in dirt balls that have come in to the area since the new strip club opened up..
Although the swing club "Hers" i have never noticed to many dirt bags as a result of that.

What about the revelation that the friendly cops in schools program will be a friendly cops carrying guns in schools? Not worthy for today's brew?
Ed the Sock turfed from City?

Good morning.

While I appreciate the need for taxi fares to increase to reflect the cost of gas, I worry about people (especially young women) who might need a cab late at night, and choose not to take one because of the expense. I wonder if fares could be adjusted according to the time of day, i.e. slightly cheaper at night, when there is less traffic.

Ryan L. on June 25, 2008 10:11 AM

I can't imagine cab drivers appreciating that. I'm sure some of their worst customers are in the evening. Drunk and rowdy, if they recieved less money to deal with them, then I could picture more drivers taking the day shifts.

I second Ryan L's comment.

I also love that picture and am disturbed by the poisoning in High Park. Just terrible.

Did someone forget to close a tag?

What is wrong with people? Poisoning dogs because they are against an off-leash park. This is a sign of a much larger problem.

Andrew on June 25, 2008 10:58 AM

The collateral damage from the poison today is the raccoons, tomorrow the children?! You know what would have saved them? Legalized handguns!

RBeezy Author Profile Page on June 25, 2008 11:05 AM

Andrew, give the raccoons the guns so they can defend themselves.

WTF is up with High Park? seems like someone out there has the Jeffrey Dahmer starter kit.

how twisted.

Ryan L. on June 25, 2008 11:06 AM

I wouldn't be surprised if this had nothing to do with the off leash area. There are some twisted people in our city.

-Poisoned Hot Dogs
-Razorblades mounted in pieces of wood in beach volleyball courts
-Serial Arsonists

Just the other day in the east end I came across a dead pidgeon...placed in a dress shoe...perched atop a tower of paving stones (in a very inukshuk fashion) on top of a 5 foot dividing wall.

Ryan L...the pigeon one sounds like someone's idea of art.

Mark on June 25, 2008 12:16 PM

The High Park situation is frightening. I've lived within a 5 minute walk of the park almost my whole life and used to walk my family dog there (my dad still does). If I had a big enough apartment for a dog, I'd have one and I'd walk it in the park. There are always dozens of dogs in the off-leash park and on the paths. I'm worried that if whoever did this is not caught we'll see more sick dogs.

Ryan L.: One of the arson incidents last summer was in the alley a few doors down from the house I grew up in. Disturbing people indeed.

George on June 25, 2008 6:39 PM

I'm bettin the dead Raccoons posed with flowers is some idiot OCAD student's idea of art...

I know the owner of 'Hers Nightclub' and it's not really catered to dirtbags, it's a mainly a "couples-only" joint. You also need a membership and you pretty much have to know the owner or have referrals from current members.

Nothing on Vaughan's Mayor and her fraudulent activities? I know it's not really Toronto, but I used to work for her and am LOL'ing at her right now!
