Fire Rips Through Townhouses on Franklin Ave

Posted by Richelle / January 5, 2008

fire on Franklin St.
At 9:30 this morning my neighborhood was blanketed in choking smoke from a four-alarm blaze on Franklin Ave.

The fire began in the corner of a townhouse unit and rapidly spread through 6 homes within an hour via the shared attic. Witnesses say there was a lack of water pressure for almost a half hour when firefighters began fighting the blaze.

I arrived on the scene just as the fire was spreading to the second house and tried to comfort one of the tenants whose cats were trapped inside the third. Initially everyone was convinced that the fire could be stopped, but 3 hours later it had gutted all 6 homes and firefighters were desperately trying to prevent it from spreading to the next row of houses.

Thankfully no one was hurt.

Photos after the jump.

From someone that has nearly lost a home due to fire (lost a pet, spent 3 months of couch-surfing while rebuilding) all I can say is that my sympathy goes out to all who lost anything in this fire.

Excellent photographs, Richelle.

The Fire Department website reports it as a 4 alarm fire.
Rather a lot of materiel there. Take a look if the link works.http://www.toronto.ca/fire/cadinfo/livecad.htm

I spoke to the woman whose cats were inside just before i left and she said the fire dept. opened the front door to let them out, but no one had seen them.

Fire is so fucking scary. I feel terrible for the people who lost their homes today.

Horrible story; awful for the residents but good thing all the people got out. Very sad about the cats. Why would there be a lack of water pressure? It's shocking that it could spread through so many homes and devastate so many people's lives so easily. Excellent images of a gut churning event.

One of my friends lives around the corner from Franklin St. and she said that the entire neighborhood is without water pressure... dribbling showers, taps etc... i *wonder* if it has something to do with all the factories in the area...

Lack of residential water pressure would have to do with the thousands of litres of water per minute being applied to control the fire.
The fire department has the authority to ask the city to pull water resources from across the city to help keep up pressure. This affects it also.

Great pics Richelle. It's not a fun thing to photograph but you did a good job.

I just passed by (was in the area) and fire and police were still there. So sad.

John,

Thanks, and you're right it wasn't fun. It was awful.

I should have been more clear in my comment about the water. The pressure pre-fire/everyday sucks in the area...

Fire is scary...and the fact that people lost pets, sucks. I'd go insane if I lost my dog to a fire.
For those other discussions we have had on homeless people...this is one of the ways that it can happen to anyone. Scary indeed.

Hi Richelle,
Stumbled upon your blog this morning researching the fire. I'm a writer for the Villager Newspaper and would love to chat with.
Would you be willing?

The photos are great by the way...

You should note that someone did get hurt in this incident - the woman who's house was the original cause of the first. Her heater was on near her bed and it caught fire, burning her face and hair. This wass a very unfortunate event and I am sorry to those who have lost their homes.
