North York to Get its Very Own Communicity

Posted by Andrew / July 5, 2007

Those crazy folks at Concord, the developer behind CityPlace are getting revved up for their next master planned community in Toronto: Concord Park Place at Leslie and Sheppard. They've gone all web 2.0y and released a YouTube promo video for the project. Seriously, who wouldn't want to live in a 'Communicity'?

WOAH! They should do the Ontario ads on TV. Makes me want to move there just to take the shuttle ~^_^~

It's a shame we've gotten to the point where condo developers are the ones building parks and 'town squares' for pedestrians, and not the municipality/city itself.

You say "crazy folks at concord." What is wrong with them? What is wrong with cityplace? Innocent question from someone who just got here. Cheers!

Lee, my comments are partly tongue-in-cheek, and partly due to the fact that some have criticized Concord's 'Communicity'-style developments like CityPlace and CityPark for their lack of integration into their surroundings (among other things).

One man's urban utopia is another man's <a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_James_Town>;St James Town</a>.

Main reason I wanted to share this video though is because it is so incredibly cheesy!

Lack of integration - they explicitly claimed that they wanted to be self-contained. So it IS part of their intent NOT to integrate, yes? And I surmise that this runs counter to a basic tenet of urban planning and design. But you're right, some people would enjoy living in an enclave.

Special transit that only residents can use? What about visiting friends and family? Or are you supposed to be so committed to "self-sufficiency" that you don't have any friends or family from outside?

"We only leave the Communicity to serve the Communicity."
