Castles in the Sky Turns the City Into a Public Playground

Posted by Roger Cullman / July 8, 2007

Castles590_20070707.jpgNewmindspace organized a giant roving street party on Saturday, July 7, 2007 starting at 7:07pm. As mentioned earlier in the day on blogTO, this street party incorporated elements of previous fun, public events such as their Bubble Battle and Subway Parties.

I joined over 200 young revellers who gathered at the south-east (dominoes) corner of Spadina and Bloor before parading east on Bloor Street to Yonge Street, where the party continued on the subway headed to Union station. The Skywalk took us to the foot of the Rogers Centre, where we regrouped before heading to the park in front of the Steam Whistle Brewing roundhouse. By dusk we found ourselves dancing by the harbourfront and watching fireworks.

I loved Streets Are For People laying down a new Bloor bike lane behind us.

Sounds like fun. However, RE: banner pic: Wow! I count 6 ridiculous looking hipsters. How many can you count?

*edit* WOW! A slideshow! It's hipster heaven! Speaking as someone that grew up in the 80's, teh fashion then sucked, still sucks, and someone needs to lock up whoever thought they'd bring it back.

I used to go to these events but I stopped because I stood out like a sore thumb. Which kinda gets in the way of the fun.

Everyone stands out at these events. The point is to have fun regardless of background or age. Once you're immersed in the crowd you'll feel less self-conscious. I hope you reconsider participation in future events such as this.

brokenengine, there were a lot of people who looked completely normal. They just don't appear in the photos for the most part. Out of about 400 photos of the event on Flickr and Facebook, I found myself in only 3. In the background. You just see the same elaborately dressed people over and over again in all the pictures. (And most of were just that: dressed up for the occassion.)

Eva: I know, I was just saying, the pics make it look like the crowd at a Flock Of Seagulls & ABC double bill.

No wait. There would NEVER be that many people to see those two bands...
