New Crosswalk Lights the Way for Annex Jaywalkers

Posted by Kevin / March 20, 2007

Shiny new lights at Bloor and WalmerLooks like Christmas is coming a little early for Annex denizens, especially when it's time to run a desperate grocery re-supply mission. For as long as I can remember, it's been a matter of life, death, and patience to jaywalk between Shoppers and Dominion at Bloor/Walmer. As the equidistant spot on Bloor between two traffic lights (Spadina, Brunswick), this was the place where cars actually picked up enough speed to make me think twice about running across with a multitude of heavy groceries.

Over the last few weeks, city workers have slowly erected a shiny set of traffic lights with crossing signals. This is great news for pedestrians and drivers alike. Though I've never witnessed a jaywalker/car collision, it may cut down on all the close calls. For the drivers, those pesky left-turns should be a lot easier at a controlled intersection.

As of this afternoon, the lights were still wrapped up. Still, it's only a matter of time before we get to use the shiny new crossing buttons like the rest of the more 'privileged' intersections.

Unfortunately, these new signals won't solve anything for those jaywalkers who get a little adrenaline rush from breaking the law, tisk tisk.

A <expletive> mazing

We go to concerts at TSP more or less constantly, this is way overdue.

I live right at these lights (in the building with the Shoppers) and believe it or not, I'm actually quite disappointed by the installation of these lights. One of things I love about this area of the city is the number of jay walkers. As a result of this 'culture of jay walking' in the area, drivers are forced to be more careful than they would be elsewhere in the city, they actually expect pedestrians to walk out into the street. Once these lights are working, that culture will be damaged. Driver will go about driving like anywhere else in the city and the streets will once again be a place exclusively for cars, rather than for everyone. Studies in Europe have actually shown that by removing all traffic controls and distinctions between streets and sidewalks, things actually get safer because drivers are forced to be more careful at all times.

That's excellent!! At first I didn't recognize the photo but once I figured out where it was I realized I couldn't think of a place in the city where I personally have had more dangerous and troublesome experiences trying to get across a busy road.

It's a busy place to cross but there is an intersection there, so it's not jaywalking.

I think a simple pedestrian crosswalk would have sufficed, rather than yet another set of lights to slow down traffic on the already gridlocked Bloor St.

I agree with Stephen... I lived right beside the Dominion for 3 years and one of the great things about that section of Bloor is that as a pedestrian you don't even have to look both ways when crossing the street (I take no responisbility if you get hit trying though ;). The traffic along that section is more concerned about hitting someone that as soon as you step out onto the street people slow down & let you go.

As a driver however, it is quite a pain making some of those left hand turns. Damn pedestrians stepping out infront of my car!! (ha ha)

Stephen, if you agree with me that too many Toronto drivers are idiots (and I imagine that you do), then how foolish are the pedestrians who trust life and limb to these idiots?

Hooray for the traffic lights!

I don't think a light here will affect the culture of jaywalking that prevails in the Annex. Most of the random jaywalking starts to the west, roughly from Major to Bathurst, because there are more stores on either side of the street that people need to reach.

The problem I see with this one location is that all of the jaywalking is concentrated in a single spot (between Shoppers/TTC and Dominion), so the density of jaywalkers is dangerous when you consider that most cars are reaching their max. speed (accelerating from lights in both directions)... this has the negative effect of reducing everyone's reaction time for running/braking.

It's a delicate balance. I think a light addresses the needs of pedestrians and drivers in this situation because there is a definite need for controlled crossing, but at the same time that control can't impede traffic indefinitely (like a crosswalk w/ no traffic lights would).

They should make a pedestrian bridge instead. No slow traffic, no pedestrians in danger... A green one would look nice ;0)
