Lower Bay Station Subway Detour - Recorded

Posted by Jerrold Litwinenko / February 25, 2007

20070225_lb.jpgIt didn't take long for a number of Toronto transit enthusiasts and shutterbugs to record their experiences on the subway this weekend and share them on YouTube and Flickr. Although not a replacement for actually being there, these photos and videos do give us a sense of what the experience of passing through Lower Bay station is like.

Be sure to check out more excellent still images by neuroticjose, including snaps of the unusally crowded Museum station.

blogTO Flickr poolers: keep those photos coming!

YouTube videos (with sound):

2) slow moving view through the side of a car

I've gone by it a few times now and I've seen something different on each trip. So many people look at it with a mixture of confusion and excitement; there was this one guy sitting beside me who was saying, "Bay Station is pretty much the most rundown stop on the subway!"

Today the announcer on the train was nice enough to say "Welcome to Toronto's famous ghost station, Bay Lower. We film movies, car commercials, and train our drivers down here. The public hasn't seen it since 1966, so enjoy!" The guy sounded as excited as the kids kneeling on their chairs to look out the window. I'm not sure if the TTC told their announcers to make this announcement, but it definitely added to the experience.

I passed through the station when things were quiet on Sunday and the experience was surreal. I felt like I was in that subway scene in the Matrix!
