Car Fire on Spadina! Run!

Posted by Tanja / February 16, 2007

Car Fire on SpadinaHow's this for bizarre story of the evening?

"I was waiting for a streetcar at 6 today at Dundas and Spadina, when I noticed a car parked in the left lane. Smoke poured out, then a few of us noticed the flames. And what did the owner do? He ran away!

Some other dude got a fire extinguisher and put the flames out as I was on the phone to 9-1-1. Two minutes later, fire crews show up and I think they eventually found the guy.

We were all panicking because we didn't know if it was going to blow up at any second."

- news tip from Jenny, ex-blogTOer and current Now Mag cover model extraordinaire.

We're glad to hear she's okay!

That guy in the photo is the one who put out the fire. What was hi-larious was the driver attempted to put out the fire with snow, but one handful at a time. No dice.

And I swear, the 10 people waiting at the stop didn't know whether to get someone else to call 911 or to stay put.

"Should we, uh, maybe get out of the way of this Dirty Harry and the Dead Pool scenario?"

"Yeah, but the streetcar is 10 feet away. Let's hope it waits to blow up after we get on."

Makes for a good "You know it's cold in toronto when..." line. I can't believe no one fled the streetcar stop. haha.

As a PSA, just so you know, cars DO NOT blow up Hollywood movie style.

When they do it is on very rare occasions.

I've seen cars burn for 45 mins with the only explosions being the windishield and all the glass. Same when the fire starts in the back (close to the tank even).

I saw a car cause a mini mushroom cloud in an explosion once, on Sherbrooke and Cavendish in Montreal. I swear* on my life.

*Note, this is a lie.

No, when a car blows, you run away and right before it blows, you throw yourself and the girl to the ground as the blast carries you and you roll, get up, brush yourself off and yell, "Are you OK?!" "I'm fine...go!!"...and you're ok to catch the bad guys...you know, like Tom Cruise...just like if you get shot, and it's only a flesh wound or goes right through...you're a-ok to punch bad guys with that same arm.
Don't hurt a bit. : - )
