Morning Brew: January 26th, 2007

Posted by Jerrold Litwinenko / January 26, 2007

20070126_MB.jpgYour morning news roundup for Friday January 26th, 2007:

The Prime Minister of Canada is slated to appear at a press conference later today to issue a formal, public apology to Maher Arar and announce that a settlement has been reached ($10 million in reparations, plus his legal fees). Let's hope that no Canadian has to go through an ordeal like this ever again.

NDP leader Jack Layton said yesterday that we're getting ripped off by our national banks and that it's not fair. I realize this every time I use an ATM (and hear that catchy "Hands in my pocket" jingle in my head), but like so many fellow Canadians, I just brush it off and feel powerless.

There's a new khat on the block that may be a part of a growing trend in illicit drug use. The stimulant - a leaf that is chewed and results in a mild euphoria, is common in East Africa has been turning up in Toronto recently.

Later this year US visitors entering Canada by air, water, and land will require passports - a change that worries some Toronto tourism advocates. Will an edgy "Live with Culture" ad campaign that pokes fun at other cities attract more Americans to our city? (view the ads)

Another freak industrial accident has resulted in the death of a GTA worker (the fourth in January). The tragic incident occurred during a film crew takedown of a movie set.

Willowdale area students are preparing for a major shakeup in their schools, seeing several closures, moving, and new schools being built in the future.

Okay, so maybe I'm a geek and have problems with parallel structure, but the ads keep saying that Toronto is nothing like Paris, New York, Hollywood...but then Italy? How is that a city? It just doesn't fit.

Then again, I'm a geek like that.

Oh, and I had no idea khat was illegal here in Canada. It's quite the common substance back home where I'm from.

And on a totally unrelated point...I think The Star's new online redesign is actually pretty decent.

Maybe it's because we perceive so much of Italy as cosmopolitan? There are lots of major cities ... Rome, Florence, Milan, Venice, Naples, and more ... famously known as international tourist destinations. It's difficult to pick out just one or two.

Not to say that France doesn't offer anything more than Paris or the United States any more than New York or Hollywood.

Khat sounds like a suped-up caffiene buzz. But the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khat>;wiki</a> reveals some interesting facts. It also looks cheap relative to other drugs (the CBC article cites $3000 for 7 kilos).

Sameer, are you bak in the T-dot?!

Um, a growing khat presence in toronto? It took an east african friend of mine about 10 minutes to get some one night we were talking about it...that was, like, 10 years ago!

Don Campbell of the Toronto police drug squad told the CBC that in 2005 there were no khat busts, and that in 2006 there were ten busts. From the sound of it, it's readily available but the Police are only recently cracking down on it.

The RCMP are saying that they make lots of busts nation-wide, including a 400kg find at Pearson last year.
