Why not give your gift directly to the charity of your choice - instead of paying CanadaHelps.org 3% off the top? I don't think a middleman is necessary in this transaction.

Erin, we're not suggesting you use any services in particular. Whether or not you like the idea of using CharityHelps is up to you, but it is an option, as is using the site merely to get ideas of who to donate to directly :)

Erin, the 3% fee is necessary to cover credit card processing fees. Any charity (or merchant) has to pay these fees to process credit card transactions - whether through our website, our their own. Not only do we have a low rate, we do other things (such as tax receipting) to benefit charities.

My apologies to Jerrold - I didn't mean to diss your posting in any way, just encouraging people to look beyond amalgamated charites such as United Way, Canada Gives, Toronto Community Foundation, etc.

Jason - we'll have to agree to disagree. I'm not suggesting that 3% is exorbitant, merely that it makes more sense for a donor to give directly to the charity of their choice. By doing so, they form a relationship directly with their chosen organization, which is ultimately of more value to both parties. And yes, I am aware that Canada Gives and other similar sites usually pass along the contact info for the donors...which makes it an even more useless extra step in my opinion. Just my opinion!

Erin - I sincerely appreciate your opinion. In fact, I agree that some donors may want to form direct relationships with the charities they support. Please note, though, that donating through CanadaHelps.org does not prevent this from happening! Thousands of charities use our service to reduce their fundraising costs and free up time so that they can spend more of it connecting with their donors. Tens of thousands of donors choose CanadaHelps.org to easily make donations to more than one charity at the same time, and because they can choose what kind of relationship they want to have with each charity they support. Some donors simply want to remain anonymous, and we're happy to provide them with this opportunity.

Erin - I think your initial point is a great one to make!

Jason/Jerrold i think this is a great site and I'm glad you clarify the 3% charge... I would like to see in this site or if possible a similar site in nature is a break down in percentages of where dose each percent gets allocated.... such as you said the 3% is credit card processing fees, another 5% in administration fees, 12 % in advertisement and web site maintenance fee... etc. I believe full disclosure and complete transparency is necessary of any charitable organization... do know of a site such as that?

Hello,
In India and the States, there's a new method of donating to charities of their choice via sms (text messaging). They can donate a set amount of $10 each time directly. It's a great way for younger, phone savvy crowd to adapt to donating vs going on the internet or mailing it. There's a company in Toronto that especializes in setting up charitable organization with this method. I think it's it's Bworks Inc or something... 416-722-6344
