VidTO: Jorgie Porgie Hustles It

"Do you like conscious conscientious hiphop?"

If you haven't met (or been pitched by) Jorgie Porgie or at least know someone who has, you need to get out onto our streets more often. He's always out and about - in Queen West, the Annex, Parkdale - and he's always hustlin'. He makes homebrew hiphop and does his own street-level CD selling, and based on this here YouTube find it looks like he's producing a show of sorts - about hustlin' in Toronto. It looks like he's made a DVD sale or two already.

In this teaser for "The Jorgie Porgie Show" he and his video crew talk their way into Ontario Place for free and are given a guided tour. Jorgie Porgie also jokingly (I hope) demonstrates his lack of skills at basketball.

For a teaser, I feel that we could have been teased a little more. Seeing Jorgie at the top of the waterslides or running the projectors in the Cinesphere would have been impressive.

Has anyone ever taken the CD or DVD pitch and care to comment on the products?

I always thought he was saying 'conscientious'. What is conscious hiphop and how does it differ from your everyday run-of-the-mill hip hop?

I've heard him say "Canadian" hiphop as well.

I'm assuming by conscientious or conscious (whichever it is he actually says) he means artists like Tribe Called Quest, Talib Kweli, etc as opposed to Puff Daddy, Snoop Doggy Dogg types.

This guy is the most unique of Toronto's local music institutions. Infamous - not famous. Known only for his consistent (and never-ending) series of low-quality CD-R's, and the fact that he is everywhere. It's scary how much he gets around this city.

I know someone who was suckered into buying one of his CDs. It was awful - and not even all original material. It was a really bad mix...not mastered at all, so every track had a different volume level.

yeh, i bought one of his CDs. i'm not a big hip-hop fan but there are the occasional artist i dig (K'Naan, K-OS, KRS-1), and for a dude without a "K" in his name he's damn good. i was surprised and happily so. great beats and rhymes about topical things. none of that bling-bling gangsta stuff at all.

recommended. if you see him, buy a CD and support local artists....

A hip hop fan says nay and a non-hip hop fan says yay?

I'm really curious about the DVD now.

Here's my YouTube comment - "Have to say i digged seeing dude on the street every once in awhile - bought some of his discs (there's one song by some danish hip hop artists that stood out) - met someone in tokyo who knew him even - but when he started hassling me (not hustling me - hassling me) for having my dog on a leash repeating " isn't that what they used to do to slaves?" i wasn't impressed."

"recommended. if you see him, buy a CD and support local artists...." -- How is that 'supporting local artists' when it's just plain old fashioned bootlegging? There are a lot of GOOD dj's in the city who work with record labels to get hot new releases and also work with independents to get their tracks in the mix with the heavy hitters. -- It seems to me like Jorgie Porgie is just selling a sub-par product when you compare it to the other 'local' products you can find at Play D or any of the mixtape shops. --

If you want to support local talent go see a talented dj like More Or Les doing it the way it should be done. and as for Jorgie.... "Instead of keeping it real, you should try keeping it right"

Bobby: did you say 400,000 CDs? or 400?

Because if you meant 400,000 that would make this hustler a 4xPLATINUM artist in Canada. Somehow I have my doubts. He ain't no Sheryl Crow :P

I listened to one of his CDs and i can say without a doubt it is some quality Hip Hop. Apparently he plays shows every wednesday at the drake (for free), so if you have any doubts about his talent, check out the Omy show at the drake
