These chicks have put an extra kick in their step. Last year these Muay Thai ladies held the 1st annual Chicks that Kick event and were able to donate $15,000 to Sick Kids Foundation. Chicks that Kick is scheduled for September 24th and will be raising money for Yellow Brick House, a charity that provides shelter and counseling to homeless or battered women and children.

The event was scheduled to be at the York Event Theatre, but unfortunately that venue has gone under and will be turned into a gym. These ladies are passionate and determined to make a difference in their community. Do you think you can help Chicks that Kick find another location for their event? If so, Chicks that Kick would love to hear from you.

I had a chance to talk with Sarah, one of the founding members, and this is what she had to say.

When was Chicks that Kick founded?
Sarah: We were founded after five girls met in a Muay Thai class and discovered there weren't very many of us around. We have then brought attention to the support and give back to the community. Last year, we referred about 100 women to area gyms that offer Muay Thai.

Tell me more about the past Chicks that Kick events.
Sarah: Last year, we held the 1st annual Chicks that Kick - it was a sell-out crowd and almost 15,000 dollars went to Sick Kids Foundation.

Where will Chicks that Kick be this year?
Sarah: Currently, we are scrambling as the York Event Theatre has gone belly up. This was the space we had booked. Now we are trying to run the event still on Sept. 24th but event spaces are extremely expensive in the city. We are shooting for over 700 this year - but that depends on space. This is very frustrating for us and we are scrambling around the city for a venue that won't break the bank for the charity. We will use a warehouse or anything. We need the help from the City of Toronto.

How much of the proceeds go to Yellow Brick House?
Sarah: All of our money goes to create the event and the funds raised from the event go to the charity.

What inspires the girls to participate in Chicks that Kick?
Sarah: We are inspired by the sport of Muay Thai and the fabulous people we meet along the way. This is a unique event and we are trying really hard for it to happen again this year. But at this point, we need a little assistance.

How can our readers join Chicks that Kick?
Sarah: Details for joining Chicks that Kick are available at Chicks that Kick. Women can check out the variety of gyms in the GTA that offer Muay Thai including Siam #1, Totum Life Science and Kru Dar.

Hey Josh,

The sport is Muay Thai and it is essentially thai boxing. Many gyms around Toronto have Muay Thai sessions. For information about Muay Thai and Chicks that Kick check out their website - www.chicksthatkick.com. The "About Muay Thai" section will answer all of your questions about the sport.

Since Muay Thai is predominantly a male sport, Chicks that Kick was founded to support the women who do participate in the sport. Sarah mentioned three gyms that offer Muay Thai in the GTA - Siam #1, Totum Life Science and Kru Dar. If you want more information on a gym closer to you, I'm sure the girls would me more than happy to help you.

For those of you who are looking for a gory and vicious introduction to Muy Thai, albeit a highly entertaining one, I suggest watching <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0368909/";>Ong Bak</a>. Tony Jaa uses Muy Thai to kick the s**t out of everyone on screen (yeah, there's no real story there).

Of course, the film is fully male-dominated, which is why groups like Chicks that Kick are so awesome.

Latest update on our chicks event - the CBC turned us down. They felt it didn't fit with the image of the CBC and what they want to do with the Atrium. They just felt they didn't want to use it for such an aggressive sport. We are really upset and frustrated now! I can't believe the CBC would turn down a proven charity event.

The folks who have taken over the Royal are planning to make it into an event theatre, perhaps they might be looking for a launch event and can cut you a deal?
