Coming Down for the Avenue

Posted by Tanja / July 14, 2006

july1406-theavenue.jpgThis is the view at Avenue Road & St. Clair, where after tearing down a bank, "the Avenue" condominium pour les elite is inching westward to make room for its fat behind.

This lovely home/office is next on list and they've put up this huge proud banner across the facade -- like it's impressive to see a nice home coming down for an condo. Who's on the community PR for this one?

Do we hate condos just becuase they are condos? I think the corner of avenue and st.clair is an appropriate place to increase density in this city. We like density, don't we? This house is nice but it's nothing special.

i saw this house on my bus ride into toronto from the lovely city of chicago, just as i was thinking about how unlovely our city is. this house caught my attention, because i thought it WAS something special. and then i saw the sign. and i cringed a little bit on the inside.

I'm with Michael on this one. I grow increasingly annoyed by the lack of actual thinking that goes into the criticism of development. Good god there are so many actual issues but they get buried in the "nothing new, nothing tall, even better change nothing at all" rant and real problems never get addressed.

I'm not against development, but the sign does seem a little gauche.

Michael & Chester, might I just point out that the post was not critisizing the development but their choice of signage. Their joyful banner makes you want to hate it 'cause their tearing down homes -- surely not what they were going for. Now, had that building been some decrepid eyesore, one could understand wanting to shout aloud to the community, but that banner is just so ill-placed it's almost shocking.

Tanja, the first paragraph of the post pretty strongly implies that there's a problem with development.

Before reading the accompanying comments, I really thought the sign was anti-condo. Like "Hey Toronto, look what we're tearing down for a condo"

And I'm not anti-condo myself. It's the only way I'm going to be able to afford to live in the city, so I can't complain.

Not really Adele, it is commenting on how big it is getting. The condo is not the problem, it's the way they're going about it with signs like that.

this lot has been locked in litigation. The original structure was supposed to be 53 stories if I remember right --and has been reduced several times to 40 something, 30 something and now 20 something, which is still 2x the height of anything else in the area.

I'm not against condos, but this one is far to big relative to the community and I hope it does not end up getting developed. Its no better then the aholes around forest hill tearing how historical brick homes and building multiple townhouses.

The banner is abnoxious and its only a testiment to the cockiness displayed by the developer. I see it everday and wonder what they were thinking when they had it made..perhaps a cheap jab at the community members who haulte dthe development by a few years?

This building isn't actually a home, is it? It's a dental office, I think. See, St. Clair Dental Group.
Anyway, when it comes down to condos or dentists, condos definitely win for me...
