Bay Street kiss-off: Poignant Protest or Gratuitous PDA?

Posted by Beth / July 18, 2006

PDA.jpg
Student Nicole Dawson, 22, made out with girlfriend Tau, 27, at the southeast corner of King and Bay yesterday to protest alleged corruption in the investment industry. Six protesters held up signs such as "Liberal OSC a Sham," "David Wilson Must Go," and "Stock Market Rotten" that targeted the Ontario Securities Commission and its chairman. The National Post has a play-by-play HERE.

There's no doubt that the protest garnered plenty of attention & reaction, but did it really bring attention to their cause, or merely to them? One could say "well, attention is attention" and I would not disagree (for the record, I am neither a prude nor homophobic!), but at what point does attention become distraction?

"This is not a one-time gig," she said, adding, "it's culturally fashionable for very young, very attractive lesbians to express their sexuality."

it's really good ya'll are giving them the attention they so much needed.

cheers

I seldom take controversial veiwpoints and I hesitated to here, but the point I was trying to make is regardless of whether it be boy/girl, girl/girl or goat/goat, this much PDA (that has nothing to do with the actual protest cause) perhaps DETRACTS from the cause more than adds to it.

Apologies if it might have offended, none intended (hey, that rhymed).

From the national Post article
>>>Organizer Steven Handler speaks: "This is about small retail investors being taken advantage of." He found Ms. Dawson by calling for volunteers on Craigslist. Neither Ms. Dawson, a philosophy student at Brock, nor Tau, a student at teacher's college at Western, has invested.<<<

I'd love to see the original call for volunteers on Craigslist.

LF: Hot lesbians to kiss and rub each other on the street. For a good cause. No knowledge of or care for the cause is required. ;)

beth - this is not really a controversial topic, i mean when i first saw this i really didn't care, it's just when i read the entire story and saw that quote, that got under my skin a little. what im upset about has nothing to do with the protest or the questions you were poising. it has to do with that little bit of lesbian-elitism that rubbed me the wrong way. im not even sure if it's lesbian-elitism, it's more like it's culturally fashionable for them to make out with each other and call themselves gay for attention.

cheers

Oh yes, two people making out and heavy petting - that'll stick it to the man for sure. Quick; someone call Mahatma Gandhi, hes been 1uped!

If it were representing a cause that was even remotely related (gay rights, anti-censorship, gender equality), I'd be all for young, hot lesbians making out.

Why weren't there two hot guys kissing? Maybe because it doesn't agree with male heterosexual fantasy. Or maybe because men aren't as much attention-whores as women are.

Overall, I think these women are just pawns for male heterosexuals. Besides, what's it got to do with corruption in the investment industry? Get a life, girls.
