Pole Placement - Leaving Room for Megabins?

Posted by Tanja / May 10, 2006

may1006_poles2.jpgThese huge wooden poles have been installed in the middle of the sidewalk near the corners of Vaughn & St. Clair and Bathurst & St Clair... as far as I've seen so far.

Nearby signs advertised the company doing the work, but not what the work was actually for.

Pretty odd placement, not to mention dangerous if you aren't paying attention! Please keep your heads up from your ipod screens folks.

Hopefully they will not be anything permanent.

Umm...I think you'll be seeing a lot of poles being removed and added. And a lot of construction along St. Clair.

Its the ROW.

Umm... I think those poles won't be in the middle of the sidewalk once the street's been widened at various points to make way for the streetcar R.O.W.

Congratulations! In working a reference to megabins into a completely unrelated story (in the title, no less), you have created a new standard for those who traffic in baseless allegation to aspire to.

Yup, new electric poles, which will eventually be at the edge of the sidewalk. Bye-bye sidewalks.

Too bad that Toronto isn't interested in burying all of its electric wiring. NYC has done that, it really make a difference in how much crap is dangling overhead.

Guess that makes sense about the ROW, I just didn't picture the sidewalks being cut in half/that severly.. more surprises to come I'm sure.

Looks like patios and jeep baby strollers will have to be banned from the sidewalks

And it's a joke x_the_x, try and relax.

That's not necessarily where the poles will end up after the work is all done. I know it doesn't make sense to you and me to keep moving things around, but this is a city project.

MEGABINS!

Should be plenty awkward while they're placed as they are, that's for sure.

To follow-up, this afternoon I saw a kid slam right into one 'cause he wasn't looking. Thank god he wasn't wearing glasses. YOUCH.

Why don't they bury the hydro lines?!?!?! I guess it doesn't matter since the ugly streetcar lines are overhead anyway...

They need the poles for the streetcar lines so, no need to bury one set of lines if another are still up there.

They've been burying powerlines all over the city, actually. Most recently in my neighborhood - the Junction. Part of the West Junction improvement project was to bury the lines. Looks much nicer now.

I wish there was a WiFi for power. One can dream.

Yonge and St.Clair had these last summer, they have since been replaced with permanent poles closer to the sidewalk edge. Ours were for traffic lights.
