Hunks of Cheese

Posted by St Dan / March 2, 2006

Cheese Magic itself. There are rumours that the Cheese Magic Boys, much like Oompa Loompas, actually live there.
When stomachs in Kensington Market turn towards cheese, smart feet walk to either Mendel's Creamery, Global Cheese, or Cheese Magic - personally I love the high counters and unequalled selection at Global. Lonely hearts however, as a recent string in Craigslist has shown, turn unequivocally in Cheese Magic's direction.

What began with a simple note of affection for the cheesemen at Cheese Magic, has seemingly opened up a floodgate of adoration and beyond. Some come for the cheese, others, it seems, for a chance to objectify their new foodie idols.

Could a cheese calandar be far off? Perhaps the Dairy Farmers of Ontario can finally abaondon those oh so cute TV spots for something that will really get the teenaged girls (and doubtlessly more than a few boys) swooning?

Man, I'm at work an hour away from Kensington and you're making me hungry AND lonely! :)

I don't like either Cheese Magic nor Global and have learned the you may not alway get what you ask for. Especially at Global where they will pass one cheese off as another; expecting that you don't know the difference. This is especially frustrating if you are asking for a cheese by brand. Or when you are offered a taste of a cheese and when you get it home you notice that the rind on it is a different color than the one you tasted in the store! I'm never going back.

My problem with with Cheese Magic well, I was in there the other day and saw that they had Bleu Benedictin and Morbier. I thought, Oh how I miss you. I caved had to have some. I asked one of the emo boys behind the counter for them. I hurried home with my cheese with a skip in my step. Only to be terribly disappointed with fetid samples of rotten milk they passed off as cheese. These were way past their prime and tasted aweful. They probably sat there waiting for someone to appreciate and partake in their beauty and craftsmanship. They wait and wait. The love that the creator poured into his cheese is unrequited; in a city where cheddar is king.

I have yet to find a good, reliable source of cheese in Toronto.
