Shootings on Yonge Street

What a brutal way to be rounding out what has been a crazy violent year in the city. In case you haven't heard, some idiots in a BMW fired shots on Yonge Street near Gerrard (think Sam the Record Man, Future Shop, Foot Locker). One dead. Seven injured according to the Star. More reports from CBC (video) and the Globe.
The blogosphere also has responded.
Has this officially gotten out of hand or have we not seen the worst yet?
Our thoughts are with the friends and families of those affected. Totally senseless.

I think it's time to ask you councillor and the police to act - and to have results...
Ban all the weapons and check tightly on the border. Persecute effectively all gangs and stupid young idiots who don't know what to do, so they 'play' with violence.
BMW - well maybe it's time to check if such money are not illecit?
It's aoutrageous what's going on in Toronto - it WAS such a beautiful and safe city... will it be in the future?
As sad as I am for the victims, the historian in me tells me what's new is old. Prof Barlett at U of T used to describe the same sort of foolishness happening in with 3rd and 4th sons in 11-12th Europe -- thugs, Prof B used to call them. It got so bad that they had to be sent off on crusade... Not there's a frightning thought for the present day.
As for banning guns -- you may as well make a martyrdom for gun culture. Have we forgotten Prohibition?
Toronto is a beautiful city -- but when you have nowhere to play, sports fields with no grass, and funding cut from programs that used to be free what else is there to do?
And sadly we live in a "stuff" culture where people who do not have are willing to shoot to get. Worse we are a society of cowards where we can hide behind a gun as opposed to coming to fists, face to face.
I am not pro-violence but these boys (and girls) were taught the discipline of boxing, Capoeira, or the Asian martial arts then perhaps they would not be so inclined to wave guns in the air.
I think we should protect our liberal justice system and avoid martial law at all costs but I think it has gotten to the point in Toronto where if the RCMP or Toronto Police decided to take some people convicted of urban gang-related crimes on a nice camping trip up North and mysteriously let them go missing at the bottom of a lake with some mysterious bullet sized holes in the backs of their heads that the general public might just not say anything. It's totally wrong but really there isn't much left in the old sympathy well. If you pick up a gun with the intent of harming someone, because you think you have something to prove, because you think you're powerless, because you're a lowly selfish piece of shit, we'll then you and everyone you might care about should suffer horribly.
When I read some people saying that it's not enough this or not enough that - I can only wonder what level of education they got.
It's the easiest way to explain that poor children have not enough of this or that - so thay HAVE to rob or shoot - WHAT AN IDIOCY!
I've lived for nearly all of my life in a country with no - or very little 'playing grounds' - but we do not have gangs running everywhere and shooting to everyone.
Oh - and those idiots who fought the only right idiology were not going on crusades because they're poor but because it was 'cool' (or their limited IQ and the clerics told them to do so).
Sorry but you didn't get it at all Kritine
If you want to change anything just educate your youth. And persecute those who behave badly - starting from young, very young children.
It is not that difficult.
I say, round them up, ship them off to Iraq, Chad, Sierra Leone, or anywhere else with serious cultural problems, where the other side shoots back to kill, give them a real war...then watch them cry like the babies that they are for a home thats no longer theirs. Little punks.
It's too funny.. one white girl gets shot and everyone wants to do something about it.. what about the other 50 shooting victims.. young black men who were gunned down, no one saw their death as anything to be concerned about. but "a so it go"
