For the third day running, Jane Creba is one of the top terms being searched in Technorati, a web site that monitors hot topics in the blogosphere. This is pretty amazing stuff when you consider that Technorati is an international (but primarily US focused) site.

Jane's murder and gun violence has certainly been front page news in all the local papers. But perhaps surprisingly, this incident has also caught the eye of international media. CNN warned its viewers yesterday that they should be wary of visiting Toronto, noting that the murder rate in the city has doubled this year.

Murder rate has NOT doubled in Toronto this year. Murder by use of guns has doubled.

Murder rate is actually much lower (52) than the high, ten years ago (88).

Well Americans cannot count very well (as many other things) from over 50 to over 70 is not double of course.

By the way even 70 is far away from over 500 in NYC (the week of Yonge accident there was 16 murders in New York), and this city is not the worst in the States... just think about Chicago, LA, Washington, Detroit, Atlanta - all with 'much' higher crime rates.

BUT this is the real problem the CITY (police, mayor, etc) should take into account... remember SARS for instance and its disastrous effect.

ALSO remember how instable American (US) tourists are. AND how eager Americans are to poit to others - remember electric outages, also SARS vs. West Nile Virus (in US there were hundreds of victims few years ago but they kept it quite as a secret).

So they (the 'city') should really and seriously get rid of all these idiots running with guns - and they should also cater more to European tourists.

I was really troubled when I got back from xmas to find out about the shooting. I've never been frightened in TO before, but suddenly I find myself looking for things that might be bulletproof to leap behind, just in case.

It's awfully hypocritical of US news services to freak their viewers out about Canada, since their gun violence stats are so much higher - but then, I lived in DC for four years while I went to U., and the only time I felt genuine fear for my life was when the sniper was taking out random people all around the metro area.

That, to me, is the thing that is truly scary about the current gun violence situation - because it's bystanders who are getting hurt, not the gang members or drug dealers or whatever stereotype we subconsciously subscribe to so we don't worry too much about our own safety.

But that's just the thing - we can't deny what's happening in our community; problems with guns (smuggled in from the US, by the by) and gangs mean there are some serious problems in the city that need to be addressed - not just by law enforcement (though, yeah, they need to get on that), but by all of us.

We all have a responsibility to our community, and I think it's time for us all to brainstorm about how we can keep Toronto safe, by working to eliminate the situations that create gang violence in the first place. Who are we excluding? Who are we not looking out for, that they have to rely on the false family and protection of guns and gangs?

Considering Toronto's growing population, technically we're becoming safer if you take the number of homicides to the population as a ratio. Therefore, if you believe we're becoming any less safe, you're an idiot that can't help but buy into the fearmongering stoked by soundbyte-happy media outlets. More people living in the city, but a relatively constant murder rate ought to tell you something. Grey matter can be useful.
