I contacted this bakery because I will be throwing a party, and found them to be rude. I had called for a couple of days, but nobody answered the phone. When someone finally did, I found that they were not pleasant at all, to the point and seemed to be rushing me off the phone. On top of that, I found that they were not flexible, as I was looking for a cake to be prepared within less than a week - no alternative was offered. She just enforced that if I had checked their website or listened to their voicemail, I would have known that one week notice was mandatory. You would think that someone who works in an industry that depends on special occassions to be a little flexible because they would want to help make your occasion more memorable. I definitely did not get a good first impression from this place, and would not recommend using them. There is a new place called Flaky Tart on Mount Pleasant south of Eglinton that is much nicer, more flexible, and can provide the same specialty cakes. That's where I will be going.

Life is interesting in that different people can go to the same location and come away with completely impressions. I think it's probably best that "Flaky" person who left the message above went away. My own experiences with It's the Icing on the Cake have been very positive...more than one birthday cake - all exactly crafted the way I imagined - and tasty too [an unusual situation when everyone is focused on the decorations, rather than the cake]...a cake created exactly like our new home, and the wedding cake for my partner in business....photographed by the bride and featured on their picture album. This is a busy little bakery managed and operated by one lady, with part time help on weekends, and the writer above should have had the grace to be a little patient, and realize that a week to design and construct a one of a kind, elaborate cake, is reasonable. I'll be sticking with It's the Icing on the Cake....

These cupcakes are my favourite in the city. I believe they only sell chocolate and vanilla but both are excellent. The icing is light and airy. Definitely worth the trip!

I have to agree with Peter on this posting. I have used this bakery on numerous ocassions to rave reviews of my guests. I find the owner to be funny, engaging and intelligent. More that I can say about someone who chooses to ignore clearly stated rules about the length of time needed when placing an order. While I'm happy to hear that cupcake has found a bakery that will deal with unreasonable requests I think that her review of this establishment is unfair and a bit petulant!
It's the Icing on the Cake deserves your business!
Eat More Icing On The Cake / July 15, 2008 at 06:23 pm
Having ordered many delicious and excellently crafted specialty cakes from this charming establishment and never experiencing any attitude or rudeness I wonder if "Cupcakes" post is nothing more than a smear campaign or plug for another bakery? I ask myself if the request was so urgent why not order form one of the other specialty bakeries in the neighbourhood rather than having to go to Mount Pleasant & Eglington?

Cupcake - get a life! Ever had a bad day? Did you consider that one weeks notice isn't that much time for a business operated by one person? Do you know the workload that was ahead of your request? How much notice did your party guests get? Perhaps you should have thought of this and planned a little earlier and that it is you that is rude and unaware.

I like to call this place my "Cakery". I have ordered cakes for special occasions from this business for over four years and every one of them has been gorgeous and delicious. The cakes are truly works of art - cutting into them is always met with mixed feelings - don't mess it up, but oooh.. it's going to be sooo good! The cake is light and the buttercream icing is -really- buttercream icing (none of that the sugary tasteless stuff).

The cupcakes are outstanding. My wife loved them so much I had a giant cupcake made for her birthday cake one year! If you haven't tried the cupcakes you are most certainly missing out on an experience that has come to define my visits to Leslieville.

All I can say is, the cupcakes at this place made me sick! I literally almost vomited after taking two bites.
chiqui / December 14, 2008 at 08:37 am
The icing on the cake is over rated. The cupcakes have more icing than cake and had so much shortening. The taste was ordinary like buying a grocery cupcake .IM very disappointed and relied on the review . Not a good place to buy cupcakes. YUCK!

I just enjoyed one of the softest, moist, cupcakes i have ever had. Drove from ronce/queen after i heard about these cupcakes, worth the drive! The lady at the counter was fantastic and very friendly, nice to share some small talk with a shop keeper. Well done, we'll see you after the baby is born :-)

horrible... horrible. I went in on Tuesday and spoke with someone about their cupcakes, her response was "what is the big deal with everyone and cupcakes, I don't like them and I don't eat them".
wow is how I felt when I left and they were horrible, I think she needs to put some love into them and maybe eat one to get it right. The cake was dry the icing was tastless. I will never be going back for anything, stay clear and keep driving east to Life is Sweet.
keven / April 27, 2009 at 01:33 pm
I agree that the owner/staff are rude and unhelpful. The 2 times I've been in here I've felt like I'm putting them out buying a full cake.

Judy, I'm with you, in fact I'd probably prefer the ones at a chain grocery store.

go see creARTive Cakes for a cake fix, you will notice and experience the total opposite over there, real nice people and work is amazing.

I have fabulously great cakes and great service from the Icing on the cake, so much so that I am always asked to be the one to bring the special cake. Linda has, on short notice and with no grousing (okay maybe a sigh) provided me with nothing short of masterpieces that everyone wants to have their pictures taken wit. A bridge hand for my mom's 95th, a camper-boller for my sister-in-laws 65th, an accordian for Fathers day, a Life mag cover for my sweetie's bday. Maybe those other guys were just the fly in the ointment. (Hehehe) Go Icing!

go to attitude bakery, they are so nice there, i went there 10 mins after they closed, and the owner was nice enough to let me in and order a cake...:) They only ask for 48 hours notice! The cake there is also super delicious...with super great service! I know some stores can be busy, but sometimes things don't work out as expected, and we need someone to be a little more accomdating...

I ordered a cake here for my husbands 40th b-day in the shape of a camera, and not only did Linda deliver a perfect replica of my hubbies camera, but put a shoulder strap on it! It was great. I was so impressed with Linda and her cake, that I, and aspiring cake artist myself, asked if I could get some behind-the-scenes experience. She welcomed me with open arms and had me help her with some jobs. Knowing her back story and how she came to be a baker and owner of such a succssesful shop, makes me aspire even more. "Cupcakes" needs to realize that it is an art, and it takes time to plan, prepare and execute these often complex cakes. Maybe cupcakes should try and make a cake herself and see how she does!!
Bopper / March 31, 2010 at 11:25 pm
staff is very rude, unprofessional when they answer the phone. They don't even have cupcake separators so when I picked them up they were all stuck together in the box. The owner is a LIAR and gives false hope for what you ask to be delivered. Maybe the cakes look good but I will never go back here again. They need to get some manners and instill a friendly professional attitude if they want to be in businss still

i am in awe of the negative comment I just read on the "icing on the cake' site... I have ordered several cakes from Icing on the cake over the years and have only experienced eye popping unbelieveable art that you can eat created and delivered with the upmost professionalism.

Miss Lynda does nor run a "regular" bakery. Lynda is an artist with great repect for her "medium"...Cake!!

our sour friend with her lack of patience has missed out on a fantastic experience of a truely "jaw dropping" show piece for any occasion.

icing on the cake truely are "one of a kind"!!

catnic001 / September 2, 2010 at 11:22 pm
The cake I ordered looked great but tasted like caca. They were nice and all and maybe it was a bad batch of batter....but looked amazing and everyone was impressed with how it looked.
cupcakequeen / October 8, 2010 at 11:47 pm
they use CAKE MIX for their cakes........ no wonder.

I haven't used this firm; I'm simply trying to gather information on it. Both positive and negative reviews are useful for that purpose. What aren't the least bit useful, however, are 'reviews' of other people's reviews. If you've had a positive experience with this firm, you're certainly entitled to report that. Is it so difficult to grasp, by the same logic--if not by some elementary sense of basic fairness--that others have a similar right to report their experiences, and that this forum is, in fact, useless unless they can do so truthfully? Is it really necessary to attack people--to imply that there must be something the matter with them--if their experiences don't conform identically with your own?

These cupcakes should win an award for wost cupcakes in the city. Hands down. I don't even care about the service. Nevermind getting my cupcakes in a brown paper bag.

I have been buying custom made cakes from Icing on the cake for years. They are creative geniuses when it comes to custom cakes. There is nothing they can't do and everytime I wheel out one of their masterpieces for a birthday or special celebration, usually people clap with delight. I would recommend them to anyone.

I don't know what there cakes are like but the cupcake i had recently was almost unedible. it was hard and dry, couldn't even finish it. what a waste.

who are you to down play someone else's experience, were you there, is their opinion less valid than yours because it's different? Get a grip, you can give your positive opinion without discrediting another, sounds like your as foul as the person that other customer warned about....SMH

I have NEVER had more of a disgusting and shocking experience at this bakery in my life!! I live around the corner from It's the Icing On the Cake and go in from time to time when I am craving something sweet. The other day, while walking by I saw the owner licking, YES LICKING things and putting them on peoples cakes!! I couldn't believe my eyes!! I almost screamed I was so shocked! I can't even think about what might have been on the treats I have eaten without gagging. I could look past the fact that they use box mix, the icing isn't made with real butter and the owner was rude/short sometimes when I went in but this is just too much! THEY'VE GONE WAY TOO FAR! I will definitely be taking my business else where and recommending friends to stay away!!

To Icing on the Cake: Thanks for contributing to a wonderful Mothers Day. We held two separate lunches for both our families with desserts from IOTC getting rave reviews. I don't know where the negative comments are coming from ( unethical competitors or bullies hiding behind anonymity perhaps?) .Our experience was certainly delightful. My wife and I are serious foodies who've travelled and tasted many great foods. We certainly appreciated both good service and delicious desserts.

Lynda from It's The Icing On The Cake was such a pleasure dealing with the last couple of days. She has a great sense of humour and provided me with helpful suggestions with my order. I am pleased to say that I have placed an order for my son's 2nd birthday party that will be held on Saturday June 1st. My husband and I are looking forward to receiving and tasting the cake. As I'm writing this little comment I am also digging my teeth into ITIOTC's salted caramel cupcake and it's yummy! Keep up the great service ITIOTC!!!

Cupcakes were awfully dry. They were not baked that day. The service wasn't that great either, I asked a couple of questions and it felt like I was bothering the girl. Avoid.
Lesa / July 21, 2015 at 01:36 pm
Thank you for another amazing cake. This was the 3rd cake I've ordered and every one has exceeded my expectations. Lynda was extremely helpful with modifications I wanted to make to the inspiration cake I found online. Her suggestions really made the cake a showstopper.
I also have to mention the cupcakes are to dye for. The "girls best friend" chocolate cupcake is the best I've had, truly delicious.
I will definitely be back.
