MUSIC | Azzo, Electroluminescent, Benefit of The Free Man + More
There's a different kind of Wednesday showcase at Rancho tonight. The usual 'strictly indie rock' mandate has been displaced in favour of Indie Social, an event to take place at various venues around the city and beyond. Tonight's refreshingly eclectic bill features the acoustic, folky sounds of Benefit For The Free Man, the soul stylings of Gasoline Gathers Hands, Gathers Friends! The two final acts of the evening, Electroluminescent and Azzo both have an ambient and psychedelic influence. Could be very interesting....
Rancho Relaxo (300 College Street), 9PM $5

MUSIC | Fitz and the Tantrums + Mookie and the Loyalists
The "soul-influenced indie pop" sounds of the deliberately-guitarless Fitz and the Tantrums hits the Mod Club tonight. This tight, LA-based outfit, carries a torch for the sounds of Stax and Motown, but with a modern edge, and has opened for Maroon 5, and appeared on Jimmy Kimmel. Mookie and the Loyalists will get the party started!
Mod Club Theatre (722 College Street), $12 8PM

CULTURE | Suffering and Smiling
This film depicts the impact of Fela and Femi Kuti's music on the people of Nigeria. This internationally respected music is the perfect vehicle for this film, and message. "Suffering and Smiling" asks some very powerful questions about civil rights, poverty and politics. Eric Guttschuss of Human Rights Watch will introduce the film.
Royal Ontario Museum (100 Queen's Park), 7PM $12

MUSIC | Beth Moore CD Release Party
Beth Moore's new disc, "The Road", drops tonight, and her folky, intimate sound is well paired with the cozy venue choice of Mitzi's Sister on Queen. Opening for the Niagara native are some choice T-dot performers, such as Mike Celia, Gavin Slate, and Future History.
Mitzi's Sister (1554 Queen Street West), 9PM

MUSIC | Light Up The Night Tour
If you like to catch as many bands as possible in one place, the Hard Luck might have your gig-de-choix tonight. Billed as the "Light Up The Night Tour", it features Dot Dot Curve and All Out - both from the US - as the headliners, with Chiara Young, and Behold! The City, and Montreal's Coloursound along for support.
The Hard Luck Bar (812 Dundas Street West,) $12 7PM
