The Neighbourhood Mixtape: Triangle Walks

The Neighbourhood Mixtape is a collection of newly-released songs by Toronto musicians. The mixtape is meant to celebrate Toronto's music culture and provide a forum to listen to and discover new local music.

Every Sunday, I post a five-track mixtape (along with my own mini-reflections for each track) that you can download or stream as a soundtrack for the week.

Track #1: Doldrums, "I'm Homesick Sittin' Up Here In My Satellite"

By now, listeners should be familiar with Airick Woodhead's (ex-Spiral Beach) project Doldrums. And in "I'm Homesick Sittin' Up Here In My Satellite", Woodhead produces a pyramid of wild sound loops and percussion, a stack of rhythmic noise clutter.

Track #2: Azores, "Sleeping In"

Azores' "Sleeping In" may sound sombre and restrained, but the track grows on you - a kind of late-night, empty room rock.

Track #3: SPORTS, "Zeus' Thundersword"

"Zeus' Thundersword" jabs and swings with insistent and precise hooks. It's a song to help break in those new summer Toms.

Track #4: Brian Passmore, "Say No More"

Keeping on the sunny side, "Say No More" warms. Brian Passmore's timid vocals still sound clear as day when the tempo picks up with a splash of distortion.

Track #5: OPOPO, "Lemme Walk"

Electro and indie-rock fuse in OPOPO's "Lemme Walk", a slick and joyous four and a half minutes of splatter beats and elastic, free-floating funk.
