A Rose by any other Name wouldn't get you Dancin'

Thursday night I made my way (in a steamy streetcar) to catch Berlin-based electro house DJ Jesse Rose at The Social. He really lit it up last time the A.D/D. crew brought him there last winter so I had to check him out again.

Jesse's original productions and remixes (for big acts like Hot Chip, Simian Mobile Disco and Armand Van Helden) have been attracting a lot of attention, but it's his DJ sets that are quickly making him a world-renowned talent. He's one of the first DJs in his genre to have multiple commercially-released mix CDs (Body Language Volume 3 and More Than One).

Local Toronto DJ (and co-owner of Footwork) Baby Joel once again warmed the crowd up for Jesse. He unfortunately spun to a mostly empty bar until the last 20 minutes of his set. I was surprised that the night started out slower than the last time Jesse was in town, but Baby Joel played a great mix of tracks and he ended with a really strange and wonderful novelty song that I wish I had in my collection.

The dancefloor was full for the end of Baby Joel's set and everyone went off as soon as Jesse started dropping the dirty bass. He played a lot of great tracks I wasn't familiar with, including a bunch that slowed down and went into different grooves before building back into harder electro. The biggest tracks Jesse played were Count and Sinden's "Beeper" and an instrumental remix of Depeche Mode's "Just Can't Get Enough". Both brought the energy in the room up to an 11.

I expect Jesse's next set in Toronto will be headlining CiRCA or Footwork on a weekend. If you like electro house done right, don't miss that night (hey, that rhymes).
