This Week in Rep Cinema features second-run and classic film selections from cinemas such as the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, The Fox, The Revue, The Royal, Toronto Underground Cinema, the Projection Booth, TIFF Bell Lightbox, and more.

We're never too far from the Golden Age of Cinema this summer. Whether it's screwball comedies, historical action films or quintessential documentaries, the Hollywood system is everywhere to be seen and its influence is widely felt. But to contrast the looming effect of Hollywood, the Summer in France series that TIFF has slowly rolled out each week, continues to offer up classic French cinematic treasures alongside forgotten films and hidden gems. This week, the two sides converge with The Bride Wore Black, a thriller with an thoroughly American plot and yet, an artistically French aesthetic.

WEDNESDAY JULY 25 / HIS GIRL FRIDAY / TIFF IN THE PARK / 9PM
Grab a blanket (and maybe an umbrella) and snuggle in for one of Howard Hawks' famed screwball comedies at TIFF in the Park. His Girl Friday is known as much for its 'marriage-plot' aesthetic as it is for its swift, quippy dialogue, influencing the pace of television shows like Buffy, Girlmore Girls, and even pre-Newsroom Sorkin fare. Rosalind Russell plays the fast-talking reporter Hildy Johnson, with Cary Grant as her scheming ex-husband, a man who is attempting every last trick in the book to make sure she doesn't remarry.

THURSDAY JULY 26 / UNDEFEATED / OPEN ROOF FILMS / 9PM
There's something electric about sports documentaries that make them almost as immersive as watching the sport itself and this film is no exception. Undefeated provides the backstory about how an unimpressive inner-city football team in Memphis, Tennessee would become a huge contender in a few short years. Coach Bill Courtney's mantra is for his boys to be good men first, and great players second, and his lessons finally gel with the players when the team gets a shot at some real glory. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $15 and the screening will be preceded by a performance by Run With The Kittens.

FRIDAY JULY 27 / THE BRIDE WORE BLACK/ TIFF BELL LIGHTBOX / 8:45PM
Truffaut's take on a classic Hitchcockian film is a rarely-seen treat and can be viewed this week as a part of the Summer in France series. Rumoured to be the inspiration for Kill Bill, this sexy thriller follows Jeanne Moreau, the 'Bride,' as she takes revenge on the five men who conspired to kill her husband on their wedding day. The film was well-received, successful and popular but Truffaut was unhappy with the result, as he desired more of an emotional film instead of the cold thriller he ended up with. But for the audience, it's a real treat. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased online or at the cinema.

SATURDAY JULY 28 / GREY GARDENS / BLOOR HOT DOCS CINEMA / 3:30PM
Screening as part of the Essential Docs series, Grey Gardens is a phenomenal example of a character-study documentary. We follow Big Edie and Little Edie, a mother and daughter duo related to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and the two introduce us and the crew (they are EVER aware of the camera) to their dilapidated home and regale us with time gone by and days of old. If you watch closely, you can see the rare unfiltered moments but for almost the entire film, the Edie's show you exactly what they want you to see. Tickets are $11 and can be purchased at the cinema.

SUNDAY JULY 29 / THE AFRICAN QUEEN / CINEPLEX / 1PM
Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart play off each other wonderfully in this unexpected action film, as the former portrays a British spinster missionary and the latter a swarthy (Canadian!) boat captain thrust together in unfortunate circumstances. After a vicious and unwarranted attack by German soldiers after the initial announcement of WWI, Hepburn and Bogie pair off in an attempt to retaliate against the Germans with the only weapons they have, their boat and their wits. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at multiple Cineplex locations.
