Morning Brew: Email Fraud Warning, Nude Awakening, Muskoka Drownings, Zoo Veterans

What's happening in the GTA (and sometimes beyond):

If you're using net cafes or had your laptop stolen recently, you may want to take extra precautions with email. Toronto Police are warning the public about a fraudster who is gaining access to email accounts, changing the password so you're locked out, and then emailing your friends and asking them to wire him/her money abroad claiming that you're stuck in a foreign country. If your friend needs emergency cash, confirm over the phone (in the very least)!

We've all had our fair share of rude awakenings, but fortunately most of us haven't had to deal with a nude awakening. A 13-year old girl woke up on Saturday to find a naked man under her bed. When she woke up and screamed, he fled. Who in their right mind does this kind of thing? (I think I've answered my own question here).

According to financial figures, the CNE would be in the red were it not for the CNE casino's rake and take. It's too bad they can't make the exhibition profitable without having to rely on gamblers losing their money (and some, their shirts) on games with the odds stacked against them.

Boating laws may be revisited after yet another death by drowning hit cottage country. Why people think it's a good idea to hop in a canoe and hit up the lake after getting wasted on booze is beyond me. Booze clearly begets lack of better judgment.

The Star has a cool piece about the handful of animals that have been living at the Toronto Zoo since its opening in 1974. An old elephant, crane, crocodile, gorilla, an a pair of emus have been residents for 35 years.

And it was another busy (thunderstorm interrupted) weekend in the city. Here's what blogTO was up to, in case you missed it.

  • Jen got all malty and hoppy at the Beer Festival at its new home on the CNE grounds.
  • Emily and Alyssa got stuffed on some delicious pizza and panini at Rapido on Bathurst.
  • Chris recounted his latest weird and wonderful GTA Tripping experience - speed dating.
  • Tim filled us in on some exciting upcoming store and restaurant openings: Sam James Coffee Bar, Quaff, Dough, Mojo's Pizza, Toxic Lounge, Shared, and Dolce Social Ballroom.
  • Joe chatted with local band The Junction about the ups and downs of being musicians.
  • And Devon chowed on hearty British grub at The Queen and Beaver and found that price for quality isn't up to par.
