Toronto hit with special weather statement as extreme winds threaten damage

Toronto woke up to the promise of temperatures soaring into the mid-teens on Thursday, the latest in a wave of spring fake-outs that has the city alternating between cold and mild weather clothing.

But Environment Canada slapped a damper on the coming warm temperatures, issuing a special weather statement for the City of Toronto on Thursday morning, warning of strong wind gusts and possible damage to trees and power lines.

The warning comes just a week after a similar system with high winds caused damage to multiple buildings in Toronto.

According to The Weather Network, "The region will jump from a wintry Wednesday to a spring-like Thursday as warmer temperatures spill across the region. High temperatures will reach the teens in many areas, with a high of 15°C expected in Toronto," adding, "Unfortunately, the warmth will come at a cost."

Environment Canada advises of moderate south winds gusting up to 50 km/h beginning Thursday morning, before shifting to the southwest and increasing in strength, gusts expected to top out at speeds of between 80 and 90 km/h later in the afternoon as a cold front affecting the city moves out.

This change will push out precipitation, bringing in sunshine and sending temperatures soaring as high as a balmy 16 C, though with harsh winds whipping across the city, it will be hard to enjoy this blast of warm weather.

Environment Canada warns that utility outages may be possible due to downed lines and trees, and adds that "wind warnings may be issued for some areas as the system approaches." A wind warning was indeed issued for the City of Toronto shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday morning.

Just as soon as the warmer temperatures arrive, they will depart once again tomorrow in another cruel false start to spring weather.

Toronto will be slapped back into cold reality on Friday, when harsh northwesterly winds will drag colder temperatures and even morning flurries back to the winter-fatigued region.
