Morning Brew: Exposed oil pipeline threatens disaster, examining the candidates for mayor, weird dining, Toronto and NYC make friends, and helping tourists
An underground Enbridge oil pipeline exposed near the Rouge River by erosion could be dangling a major spill over the region like the sword of Damocles according to Environmental Defense, a legal organization mapping the line. The pipe that runs from Quebec City to a refinery in Sarnia cuts across the GTA and has been poorly protected since it was first exposed by the action of the river. Naturally, a spill of any size could devastate the region and Lake Ontario.
The next mayoral election might be two years away but the National Post is already taking a look the major players in and around City Hall who could make a run for the top job. Ford, Vaughan and Stintz could be big names on the ticket - who else would you like to see run for mayor?
If you glimpse a crowd of diners dressed all in white chowing down somewhere in Toronto this Thursday you really aren't hallucinating. 1,400 participants of Diner en Blanc, a worldwide celebration of food, drink and, apparently, uniform clothing, will be pitching up somewhere in the city - only the organizers know where - for a picnic later this week. If you want to join this the first Toronto version of the event - tough. It's sold out.
Toronto could soon be advertised alongside New York City. Michael Thompson, Toronto's chair of the economic development committee, is in talks with New York City officials to develop a branding relationship that could involve joint advertising and discounted flights between Pearson and JFK. My suggested slogan: "Come for the Apple, stay for the Hog."
One man's attempt to visit thirty GTA mosques in thirty days during Ramadan by bike was nearly thwarted by thieves this weekend but Canadian Tire stepped in and replaced Himy Syed's stolen orange Norco with a brand new set of wheels. Hurrah!
Lost in the city? There's an app for that (and it's not Google Maps.) A network of signs, maps and smartphone applications designed to help tourists navigate the city during the 2015 Pan Am Games is set to go before the public works committee in September.
