Ontario city is home to a Trump Avenue that's about to be renamed

Did you know there's a residential street in Canada's capital with Donald Trump's name on it? Well, not anymore.

Ottawa City Council unanimously agreed on Sept. 23 to rename Trump Avenue, a residential street that was named after the current U.S. president more than 20 years ago.

River Ward Councillor Riley Brockington introduced the motion on Sept. 9, asking council to approve the name change, though he did not provide a replacement name.

Ottawa clearly has a soft spot for New York City. Trump Avenue is but one of many streets in the aptly named Central Park neighbourhood that pay homage to the Big Apple, alongside Madison Park, Manhattan Crescent, and Staten Street.

The vote to rename Trump Avenue comes a month after the president signed an executive order seeking to rename Lake Ontario "Lake America" — a name that, unsurprisingly, hasn't exactly caught on everywhere.

Major companies like MapQuest, for instance, have refused to adopt the new name and subsequently saw a surge in app downloads last week as a result.

Now that Brockington's motion got approved, the next step is to hold what is called a public consultation process so that local residents can weigh in on what the new street should be. Residents may decide to stick with a New York-themed name in the sake of consistency or come up with a totally different name altogether.

"I do believe this is about a new beginning, and I want this to be a community-led process where the community ultimately will select and recommend to city council what that new name will be," Brockington said at City Hall.

He did not confirm when the public consultation process will begin.

In the meantime, people on Reddit have plenty of ideas for a new name.

"Change it to Obama Avenue and watch the tantrum," one user wrote.

Another Redditor threw in a Canadian hero's name in the hat: "Terry Fox Drive if there isn't already one."

Meanwhile, someone else commented that "would be nice to call it Lake Ontario Drive" to keep the momentum going.

"Change it to Tragically Hip Street," wrote one user, referring to one of the most influential bands in Canadian history.
