Ontario is one of the 52 Places to Go in 2025 according to the New York Times

Ontario has officially made The New York Times' list of places to go in 2025. 

The newspaper's annual list features 52 destinations across the globe to travel to each year, and Ontario got a special shoutout in this latest edition. 

The province's 240-mile Trent-Severn Waterway — a canal route that connects Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay — was ranked #40 on the list. The publication highlighted the impressive system of rivers, lakes, and canals that stretches from one of Ontario to the other, flowing through "rustic villages," woodlands, and waterfalls. 

The list acknowledges that 2025 is the year to visit the area, as it is experiencing a "renaissance" with the addition of the new 65,000-square-foot lakefront Canadian Canoe Museum, which features the largest collection of canoes, kayaks, and paddled watercraft. 

The $45 million museum is located on the Traditional Territory of the Williams Treaties First Nations in Peterborough, and also comes with a canoe house, gathering circle, campfire pit, and two expansive seasonal docks to accommodate on-water and outdoor education programming. 

"The museum exhibits styles from across Canada — showcasing them in a curved building inspired by, yes, the canoe — and honours the vessel's Indigenous legacy," the list reads. 

The publication notes that the waterway is undergoing a multi-year revitalization project, which includes retrofitting its monumental hydraulic loft locks. 

Boat rental company Le Boat also got a shoutout for expanding its self-drive cruising opportunities and route out of the renovated Horseshoe Bay Marina.

Family-operated farmhouse brewery 100 Acre Brewing Co. was another business that received a special mention on the list for its innovative brews like the floral Monarch saison, which is named after the butterflies that migrate through Ontario each year. 

The New York Times also highlighted a quintessentially Canadian dessert to grab while you're visiting the area — BeaverTails, of course. 

Other top global destinations on the list include Jane Austen's England, New York City Museums, "White Lotus" Thailand, Greenland, Aix-en-Provence, France; Sun Valley, Idaho; Lumbini, Nepal; and Sydney, Australia.
