Toronto Blue Jays can be eliminated from playoff contention tonight

The Toronto Blue Jays are officially one loss away from being mathematically eliminated from postseason contention.

With five games left in the 2026 season, the Blue Jays sit four games back of the Chicago White Sox for the third and final American League Wild Card spot.

For Toronto to secure a playoff spot, it would need to win its final five games, while either the White Sox or Cleveland Guardians would need to lose all five of their remaining games.

Just two weeks ago, the Blue Jays had a 35 per cent chance of reaching the postseason despite their up-and-down, injury-plagued season. But after dropping six of their last 10 games, those playoff odds have plummeted to just 0.3 per cent.

Toronto plays a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, and a loss in either game will eliminate the Blue Jays.

Even if Toronto manages to sweep the doubleheader, it will still need plenty of help from around the league.

The Blue Jays have backed themselves into a corner. Even if they win both games against Baltimore, Chicago or Cleveland could eliminate Toronto simply by winning their respective games on Wednesday.

The White Sox are on the road against the Kansas City Royals, while the Guardians face the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

If the Blue Jays don't manage to qualify for the playoffs, they would become the first team since the 2008 Colorado Rockies to reach the World Series and then miss the playoffs the following season with a losing record.

The best record Toronto can now finish the season with is 82-80, which would be its worst record since 2024, when the Blue Jays went 74-88.
