Yonge Street Warehouse
Yonge Street Warehouse is yet another outpost of the Canadian empire that includes The Dime, Queen Street Warehouse and El Furniture Warehouse, famous for its $5.95 bar food menu, zany rainbow of drinks and long lineups at the door.
This one is multiple levels and situated right in the heart of what’s already a student-heavy strip.
The lower and upper floors are much the same, teeming with people, dim, outfitted with strings of lights and TVs blaring no longer than a few minutes of the same music video at a time.
A SUNRISE sign on the lower floor recalls a Yonge Street past.
Perogies are your basic cheddar-stuffed, pan-fried deal, albeit smothered in chipotle mayo, roasted red pepper puree, sour cream and green onion.
We also add a heap of gluey shredded cheddar, and the menu pushes an addition of maple bacon for $1.95 (these kinds of add-ons appear to be how Warehouse menus scrape by).
Warehouse Crispy Mac n’ Cheese similarly sops up alcohol with a three cheese and roasted red pepper alfredo sauce topped with a crust of corn flake, thyme and parmesan.
We make it a little more festive with the addition of bacon and feta, but this has the effect of salt on salt, though that might be just what a bargoer wants.
A “works” burger is at least halfway decent, probably the thing to order. All options from the “between bread” section of the menu come with a side of either soup, peppered fries or greens so there’s a little extra value there.
The roasted turkey sandwich is essentially what you have when you come home from partying with your friends on Christmas because you’ve got the day off for Boxing Day.
Cranberry sourdough is somewhat sodden thanks to pickles on top, sandwiching house roast turkey breast, Swiss, macho sauce, some gummy stuffing, honey mustard and lettuce.
The Pink Warehouse ($12.75) is what you pay for here, a riff on their signature Pink Lemonade concocted of Gordon’s, peach schnapps, grenadine, lemon juice, and simple syrup.
The Warehouse is spiked with an upside-down bottle of Corona to dilute and freshen the hyper-sweet cocktail.
A Blue Hawaiian ($6.75) is a shorter-lived though more affordable classic sweet and tangy combination of Malibu, blue curacao and pineapple with decent froth for a quick mixed drink.
Be prepared to deal with crowds and noise at this sprawling, over-the-top extension of the Warehouse brand.
The food isn’t gourmet, but with the infamous price tag, amount of alcohol likely coursing through your system and length of time you might have been waiting to get in you’ll likely be down for the ride.
