Stunning Toronto home worth nearly 3 times what it sold for a decade ago

It's one thing to watch a Toronto house nearly triple in value because it went from an absolute dump to a liveable home.

It's another thing to witness a freshly renovated house get re-renovated and then skyrocket in price.

And yet, that's exactly what happened at 66 Thorncrest Rd., a sprawling luxury home in Etobicoke's exclusive Thorncrest Village neighbourhood that's currently listed for $5,998,000.

And while $6 million is obviously a staggering amount of money for a house, it's particularly staggering when you consider what this same property sold for just over a decade ago.

According to property records, 66 Thorncrest Rd. sold for $2,325,000 in June 2015.

So, if it manages to sell anywhere close to its current asking price, the property's value will have increased by roughly $3.7 million in just over 11 years. That's about a 158 per cent increase — or roughly two-and-a-half times its 2015 sale price.

Of course, this isn't exactly the same house it was back then.

The current listing notes that the home has since been renovated "right down to the brick," with new insulation, electrical and mechanical systems, security features and more.

But here's the thing: the house was already renovated when it sold in 2015.

At the time, the listing described it as having been renovated "from top to bottom," with a private 95-by-200-foot lot, landscaped gardens, a saltwater pool, huge windows, five skylights and three fireplaces.

The primary suite already boasted a six-piece ensuite, two walk-in closets and a walkout to a private balcony. So this wasn't exactly a fixer-upper someone bought for $2.3 million and transformed into a $6-million dream home.

Instead, someone apparently looked at an already-renovated multimillion-dollar house and thought: "Let's renovate it again!" And more than a decade later, the property has gone from merely luxurious to full-blown mansion territory.

Set far back from the road and surrounded by mature trees and elaborate landscaping, the home feels remarkably secluded considering it's still in Toronto.

The huge lot is nearly half an acre, giving the property the kind of space and privacy that's increasingly difficult to find within city limits.

Inside, things kick off with a grand foyer boasting soaring 20-foot ceilings.

But despite the home's scale, the interiors don't feel particularly cold or museum-like.

The family room, for example, has authentic timber beams that give it a modern farmhouse feel, while enormous windows throughout the house bring in tons of natural light and views of the surrounding greenery.

The kitchen is similarly over-the-top. The listing claims it's suitable for a "Michelin-Star chef," with custom cabinetry, an enormous island and top-of-the-line appliances.

Whether an actual Michelin-starred chef would agree is anyone's guess, but it certainly looks expensive.

The main living spaces are largely open concept, with wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the backyard.

And the backyard is basically what you'd expect from a $6-million suburban estate.

A saltwater pool is surrounded by manicured landscaping and plenty of outdoor living space, all tucked behind enough greenery to make you temporarily forget you're in Etobicoke.

Every bedroom also has its own ensuite bathroom, meaning no one has to endure the indignity of sharing.

The primary suite takes it several steps further, with an enormous bedroom, a luxurious ensuite, and the kind of closet space that could probably hold the contents of a small Yorkville boutique.

The home is located in Thorncrest Village, a particularly leafy pocket of Etobicoke known for large lots, winding roads and seriously expensive houses.

And 66 Thorncrest Rd. certainly isn't bucking that last trend. The property was initially listed for $6,195,000 before having its price reduced to $5,998,000.

That's a $197,000 price cut, although at this price point that's practically pocket change.

Whether the home actually manages to fetch close to $6 million remains to be seen.

But even accounting for the extensive renovation that's taken place since its $2.3 million sale in 2015, it's pretty remarkable that an already-renovated Toronto home could add nearly $3.7 million to its asking price in just over a decade.
