Everyone has a favourite Christmas classic they watch this time of year: Home Alone, The Holiday, Die Hard, the list goes on. If The Santa Clause happens to be your comfort movie, you could spend a few nights at the house it was filmed in.
In the 1994 comedy, Tim Allen plays a typical suburban dad whose life gets flipped upside down when he accidentally becomes the new Santa Claus. Although the movie is set in fictional Lakeside, Illinois, filming actually took place in Oakville, Ont. The house used in the movie is located at 17 Chisholm St.
Remember that scene where the real Santa fell off the roof to make Tim Allen's character become the new Mr. Claus? That's the house. Not as iconic as the Home Alone house, some would argue, but the Oakville community seems to take pride in this little slice of movie history.
For the past six years, homeowners have been listing The Santa Clause house on Airbnb. It's described as a "luxury townhouse" with two bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. The house may have been used for filming over 30 years ago now, but the interior is anything but retro.
Once you step inside, the spacious foyer is decorated with a nice Christmas tree. Dark hardwood floors run throughout the entire three-storey home, and the walls look freshly painted in taupe.
The kitchen is modern with white tiling and a huge kitchen island for cooking or serving breakfast. There's even a separate room that appears to be a bar, so guests can be fancy and decant their local wines.
The hosts even converted an attic room into a cozy yoga studio, in case guests want to get a workout in on vacation.
The living room is decked out in grey with plenty of sofas and chairs to gather around the fireplace and watch TV.
The bathroom looks newly renovated and modern, with a glass shower stall and two sinks.
Some amenities include Wi-Fi, free parking, outdoor dining space (perfect if you book during warmer months), and a washer, but not a dryer.
If you wish to spend a few nights here, say, Christmas Eve to Boxing Day, it'll cost you.
The total for a two-night stay comes to $4,200, plus a $474.35 Airbnb fee. Sounds like a lot for two people, but if a group of four gets in on it, it breaks down to around $1,170 per person. Still sounds like a lot, but if you've always wanted to live in an iconic Christmas movie house, you've got to pay that premium.
Nostalgia comes with a price tag, so it seems.
