Popular Toronto event returns after 2025 cancellation but things will be slightly different

The new year means a new start for one of the many festivals recently cancelled in Toronto.

Sugar Shack TO, one of Toronto's most iconic wintertime traditions that celebrates all things maple, is set to return for 2026 after a brief hiatus.

For the unversed, Sugar Shack TO, presented by Redpath Sugar, announced early last year that it would not return in 2025, marking the end of the festival's six-year streak in the city.

"Sugar Shack TO was unfortunately cancelled in 2025 due to rising production costs and a reduction in sponsorship revenue, which is our only funding source. It's a free, unticketed event, and we don't generate nearly enough revenue from taffy ticket sales onsite," Victoria Mahoney, Head of Marketing and Partnerships at Harmony Marketing, tells blogTO.

Given the factors that limited its chances of success in 2025, organizers had to implement changes to the event's infrastructure to make a noteworthy comeback this upcoming season. In the end, a partnership with Harbourfront Centre gave the festival the boost it needed to return.

"We were extremely fortunate to connect with Harbourfront Centre and establish a partnership to host Sugar Shack TO in 2026. Harbourfront Centre has infrastructure and production resources on-site that we previously had to bring in ourselves, including washrooms, fencing, and security. This is helping us cut production costs significantly," Mahoney says.

So, does the change in host venue mean attendees can expect a different experience? The short answer is yes — but they're good changes.

Mahoney confirms Sugar Shack TO's format remains the same: a two-day event featuring everything Toronto has come to love, including free general admission, two Sugar Shacks, a warming station and endless maple-infused comfort food.

But there's even more this year.

"As a result of moving to Harbourfront Centre, we can bring back past festival favourite programs, including a stage with live entertainment, which we couldn't afford in 2024. We will be announcing new and returning acts in the coming weeks on our social media and website."

Sugar Shack TO is set to make its much-anticipated comeback on Mar. 14 and Mar. 15, running daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Harbourfront Centre, located at 235 Queens Quay W.
