Radar: Spectrum Road, Toronto Sculpture Garden Picnic, Jaggery with Clara Engel and Jaron Freeman-Fox, The EROS Cabaret

MUSIC | Spectrum Road
"Supergroup" is really the only way to describe Spectrum Road, who play at The Sound Academy tonight as part of the TD Toronto Jazz Festival. This newly-formed group carries a 'fusion' torch, and it burns brightly, being made up of musicians that have walked (and rocked!) on both sides of the jazz/rock continuum: Jack Bruce rose to fame with Cream, but also did experimental work with Carla Bley and John McLaughlin, while John Medeski is well known as one third of Medeski/Martin and Wood, a group whose very mandate is to explore jazz improvisation in other musical contexts. Cindy Blackman Santana worked for many years as Lenny Kravitz's drummer, but also has some serious jazz chops, and has toured with Don Pullen, Pharoah Sanders and others. This should be an interesting show on many levels.
Sound Academy (Polson Street) 9PM $45

ART | Toronto Sculpture Garden Picnic
The Toronto Sculpture Garden hosts an excellent evening with an outdoor picnic and a talk with curator Rina Greer, who will discuss both the current art on display and the important role that art collectors play in the 'art economy.' The Toronto Sculpture Garden has been a vital part of TO's art scene since its inception in 1981, and exists largely as a small outdoor park area where artists experiment with the possibilities of this unique outdoor space, and its potential for containing and presenting their creations.
Toronto Sculpture Garden (115 King Street East) 7:30PM $15

MUSIC | Jaggery with Clara Engel and Jaron Freeman-Fox at The Boat
An interesting and eclectic bill goes down tonight at The Boat in Kensington Market. Clara Engel is a TO singer/sonwriter whose sometimes dark and brooding style seems as though it might be strongly influenced by artistic forces outside of music. Jaron Freeman-Fox is a ubiquitous TO violinist who spends most of his time as a sideman touring with the likes of Delhi 2 Dublin, with whom he shares a strong understanding of both North Indian classical music and traditional Celtic music, and this will be a chance to see where his own compositions are at. Also on the bill are Jaggery, a art-rock band from Boston, self-described as "torture chamber pop," and whose moniker might be alluding to The Rolling Stones' frontman, or the raw cane sugar used in South Indian cooking...or neither. Better head down to the Market tonight to find out!
The Boat (158 Augusta Avenue) 8PM $5

VARIETY | The EROS Cabaret!
A cabaret series that promises "a spectacular show" goes down tonight at The Rivoli. Tonight's lineup: Sarah Mills, Marvelous Martha et Les Rag-a-Muffins, Jannine Saarinen, Lauren Runions, the dancework of Victoria Seguin, and musical guest Ryan McCalister. This is a regular event which strives to deliver a multi-disciplinary show, complete with comedy, live music, dance, and film.
The Rivoli (332 Queen Street West) 9PM $15
