Radar: Songwriters in the Round, "Nomad's Land," PWYC Wednesday at Rancho Relaxo, Stacey Kaniuk, Spoke N' Heard

MUSIC | Songwriters in the Round
Songwriters In The Round presents a showcase of songwriting talent at the Rivoli tonight, with a "Nashville-style song circle" vibe. There's an awesome lineup, as well! Local singer/songwriter Emma-Lee, whose album "Never Just A Dream" received major praise from critics when it was released in 2008, will be previewing some tunes from her upcoming "Backseat Heroine" CD. Andrew Austin is also performing in this showcase, and this instrumentalist who hails originally from Sarnia has seen his tunes chart nationally on campus radio and placed in TV shows and commercials. Also playing tonight are Peter Katz, a CBC Galaxie Rising Star Award recipient, and Adaline, whose Hawksley Workman-produced album, "Modern Romantics" will be dropping this Fall.

FILM | Free Favourites at Four presents "Nomad's Land"
"Nomad's Land" is a documentary exposing the realities of life as an 'army wife'. Filmmaker Claire Corriveau, whose spouse joined the Canadian Armed Forces, has experienced this lifestyle first-hand, which often involves displacement, isolation, and powerlessness, as an outside force has ultimate control over almost every aspect of a military family's life. This hour-long film, in French with English subtitles, will grapple with these issues and more.

MUSIC | PWYC Weds w/ Redanda, Mother Leads & Laffhappy
Another awesome PWYC Wednesday goes down tonight at Rancho! First off, a solo guitar and vocal performance from local artist, Laffhappy, whose recorded output includes a full band, but will be delivering the goods tonight in a 'stripped down' format. Filling the middle slot on the bill is Mother Leads, a trio from Ajax who promise to rock the house in a unique fashion, and the buzz going around seems to imply that they will keep that promise! Tonight's headliner is Redanda from Hamilton, who have been described as sounding like early Strokes, which can only be a good thing.
Rancho Relaxo (300 College Street) 9PM PWYC

CULTURE | Spoke N' Heard :: POETRY & MOTION
Spoke 'N' Heard is a regular TO "artistic collaboration" night that was launched near the beginning of this year, and has been gathering a nice following. It's meant as an opportunity to network, and check out those who are putting their talents out there. Tonight it's the third official Spoke 'N' Heard showcase, and local talents such as the event's founder, JV Da' Poet, Shamana, Northbuck, and Ritalin will show you what they've got. You know where to go if you're looking to connect with your inner poet.
Lambadina Lounge (875 Bloor Street West) $10 6:30PM
