Shown as part of TD's Then and Now program, this exhibition features hundreds of vernacular polaroids found by artist Zun Lee. Fade Resistance is an archival project created by Lee that seeks to restore the narrative impact of thousands of found African American vernacular Polaroid photographs. With Polaroid photography, everyday life moments can be captured, viewed and shared without delay or interference. There is often also a performative aspect: posing to reflect how the subjects saw themselves.

Fade Resistance is a reminder that there is a vivid recent history of Black visual self-representation. Lee's hope is that this archive offers a contemporary counter-narrative to mainstream distortion and erasure. By showing how black families documented themselves throughout recent decades, this project aims to spark meaningful conversation regarding issues of agency and empowerment in the depiction of African Americans.
