Piano and sax duo that floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee.

“Wriggling sax runs against boogie-like piano fuse together so heatedly that both players’ notes blur into drones” – the Guardian

”It sounds like both men know exactly where their partner is at any given moment and are ready for whatever comes next. And yet at the same time, it has that super-live spontaneity.” Duncan Heining – Jazzwise

British improvised music masters Trevor Watts and Veryan Weston have built on their long and distinguished careers with this intimate and inventive duo project. This show marks a welcome return to Southern Ontario.

Pianist Weston and Saxophonist Watts have been creating their own musical languages for over 40 years. Possessed of a fleet, burbling and precise style, Watts was at ground zero of the British free jazz explosion with his participation in John Stevens’ Spontaneous Music Ensemble. He has worked with Barry Guy and Steve Lacy and fused rock instrumentation, free jazz and collective improvisation with his group Amalgam. Watts’ Moire Music ensembles melded intricate African polyrhythms with free melodicism.

Weston is known as a more sparse and contemplative player. His close collaborators include Lol Coxhill and Phil Minton, and he is fabulous in a solo setting – introspective, slightly romantic and always spacious.

Together, Weston’s resonant clusters and rumbling ostinatos provide an effective foil for Watts’ tart tone and snaking lines. As a special treat, Watts and Weston will be joined by Barnyard Drama (see Tim Berne, following page) for an end-of-set encounter.

Opening the evening is Segger vs. Segger, an improvising duo comprised of Mark Segger on drums and Heather Segger on trombone. The duo is developing a musical style that can be described as contemporary art music with pan-stylistic references and compositional elements, creating soundscapes and raw textures – often with a touch of humour.
