TorontoMet Film Fest
TorontoMet Film Fest has announced that this year's festival will have its encore at the Winter Garden Theatre on May 3rd and 4th, 2024, and all fourteen films were shot by female-identifying cinematographers.
Formerly known as The Image Arts Film Festival and RUFF, the TorontoMet Film Fest showcases short films from the graduating class of Toronto Metropolitan University's School of Image Arts. Over four intensive years, these students learn all facets of filmmaking, beginning with hand-loading old film cameras and culminating in producing large-scale thesis projects.
A student-run event, the TorontoMet Film Fest allows the public to see works from the next generation of Canadian storytellers in a professional and industry-oriented setting. This year's festival features fourteen new thesis films with diverse contemporary subjects told using narrative, documentary, and animation techniques. A unique occurrence in the festival’s history, each of this year’s greenlit projects had women in the role of director of photography.
Having run for over twenty-five years, past TMff films have gone on to win awards at both local and international festivals. With over 1400 seats, the festival's relocation to the historic Winter Garden Theatre (189 Yonge Street) last year gave a suitably dramatic backdrop for Toronto art lovers to view the next wave of cinematic talent. Both this year's daytime events and nighttime world premieres are sure to continue this tradition forward.
