TON BEAU STRING QUARTET

$20; $10 students (Cash Only)

Programme

Mendelssohn, String Quartet, op. 13

Schoenberg, Verklaerte Nacht, Featuring Caitlin Boyle, viola and Rachel Desoer, cello

A look at young lust and love from both ends of the romantic period. Mendelssohn's teenage passion runs through this fiery quartet, which captures the energy of the burgeoning romantic style. Schoenberg's iconic sextet, Verklaerte Nacht, is often described as the culminating masterpiece of the late romantic period. Inspired by a poem by Richard Dehmel, Verklaerte Nacht follows the story of a young couple as the woman reveals that she is pregnant with another man's child, and the man agrees to raise the child as his own.

The Ton Beau String Quartet was founded in 2010 by four friends studying at the University of Toronto. In their three years together, they have traveled throughout Canada and the USA, presenting concerts as well as educational and outreach programs. They have performed at the Harbourfront Music Garden, Gallery 345, the Maureen Forrester Recital Hall at Wilfrid Laurier University, Dinkelspiel Auditorium at Stanford University, the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Music Society, the Banff Centre, and the St. Luke’s Gift of Music Concert Series in Creemore. In addition to their busy performing schedule, the Ton Beau Quartet are active teachers, and participate in numerous educational outreach presentations. Past outreach initiatives have included presentations at Holland-Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, the Merriam School of Music, the Health Arts Society of Ontario, and a three-year series of concerts at the University of Toronto Art Centre. The quartet has also collaborated with musicians from many other musical traditions, including performances with the folk band The Krüger Brothers, and a collaboration with Spectrum Music, a group of classical and jazz composers. The Ton Beau are currently Quartet in Residence at the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto.
